Tim Howard

Form Andy Gray <echo.
“You need a goalkeeper with authority, who is assured, whose mind is clear and focused on the job, because any mistake you make as a goalkeeper is punished fully. Leicester did that with a couple of errors he made.

“It may be something that Roberto has to look at. I know Robles played half a dozen games earlier this season in the league when Tim was out injured and it might be for his own sake, as much as Everton’s, that Tim drops out of the firing line and Robles is brought in to finish the season.”
It would hard to even disagree with him on this one

But he was tested. He caught and held most balls that came into the box. His distribution was great and so was his communication. He also pulled of a few saves. He commanded the box well and was a great presence. You're also saying Robles played two bad teams. Then what type of team is Liecster? Howard has been terrible all season. If I didn't know you were American I would be very puzzled to why your defending him getting a game over Robles.

LC and YB are both bad teams though Chelsea certainly is not and my point had more to do with the first 4 months of the season than the past 2.

I am not supporting sticking with Howard. I have now seen enough. I just did not think Joel had done enough to keep Howard out 3 weeks ago. Howard had a 10 year EPL track record that had a poor run of form prior to injury. It would not be unheard of for a player to regain form after 6 weeks away. My being American has nothing to do with this opinion, anymore than your preference for Barkley or Stones has to do with your treatment of them. That's not fair, I can certainly grant a scouser a soft spot for Barkley if they were prone to one. It is my preference for establishing a new "correct diagnosis" before going in and removing the infection rather than just cutting first and making sure it was right later.

I suggest you look at those early games again, there his a significant amount of evidence to the contary

This season. But really this season came from nowhere. He was great this past summer when he led a bunch of inferior footballing ragmuffins into the round of 16 and made something like 15 saves to almost carry his squad into the round of 8 at the WC. He was the keeper for a 5th place finish in the league a year ago. He then came to England and played rubbish for four months. It was not outrageous to think a 6 week break could help him restore focus and strength and maybe he'd come back the keeper he was as recently as July.

It appears after three games that has not happened and I am confortable going back to Joel starting Thursday and carrying forth until he proves to be more of a problem than Howard has been. I hold the same opinion on Osman (though things are crowded at his spot) and especially Pineaar where we have had no great option present itself this season .

Anyone know where to look for a new keep this summer?

Disclaimer: I'm American. I have a Tim Howard jersey. I've been an Everton fan long enough to remember being confused as hell listening on the radio when Paulo Di Canio caught the ball after Paul Gerrard went down, so, well before Tim Howard.

Some players deserve a certain amount of latitude based on past performance/commitment. It isn't necessarily sentimentality, more familiarity and history providing the belief that poor patches can be worked through and form regained. Lest we forget, Howard has been the starting keeper for 9 seasons, with our worst finishing position in that stretch being 8th. European performances, FA Cup final, and semi-finals, League Cup Semi-Final, 122 clean sheets. He had a good 2013/2014 season, and of course, a great World Cup just 7 months ago.

That being said, I think Howard has used up his latitude and Joel deserves another extended run this season. That doesn't mean Howard should be shipped off immediately. It doesn't mean he can't regain his form and still be a strong Premiership keeper, but you can't ignore his recent poor play.

I'm starting to really think that some of our players have a clause in their contracts that states they must play every minute they're fit and able to.
Sometimes a player needs dropping for their own good as well as the teams. Surely Bobby can see what we're all seeing?

I can't believe this debate rolls on and on whether tim is good; bad or indifferent , stats for this stats for that. By now you've all seen what happened yesterday ffs he's shi£e in fact he's shi££er than shi£e. My missus reminded me i said about 3 seasons ago i said he'll never be a great keeper and it killed her to say 'you know you were right for once ' just the once though.
