I just can't see that team out there being good enough to win in europe.

I'd love to be wrong but we look so bad, young boys muts be licking their lips.

I mean this has literally been our worst season in the domestic cups in our entire history ever.

yeah i know, but we're the same team who put 6 past a wolfsburg which just spanked arguably the best team in the world. we have a very talented squad with a great future, we've just had so so many players vastly under-performing all at once. i think martinez' style is very much suited to europe, as proved by our results. thankfully we've picked up our form a tiny bit just as the comp is picking back up, god knows we would have been knocked out every week over the last few months if we had to play.

one solace i can take is that hopefully with howard being re-instated, robles has earned the trust to be used as the cup keeper. i just know that that bearded tw*t will make a massive mistake in a crucial moment in a crucial game - i have no confidence in him whatsoever.

He's a clown and i want him burnt at the stake.
You're getting confused. Witches get burned at the stake, not clowns

Young Boys aren't all that ( can't believe I just typed that ffs ).

Wouldn't surprise me if, with the pressure off and expectations low, we got a result on Thursday and then did enough at Goodison to get through. Even with my blue tinted specs on I can't see us winning the tournament though.

Oh, yeah I think this tie is winnable but look at some of the other teams left.

We'd need to get back to last season's form to do it. And we're some way from that, now.

We will beat Young Boys.

As for after that, I will get back to you.

You see a turning point and warning signs at January last season, but we won half our total points in those last 18 games. I think it was more of a case that we missed out on a CL place because we had so many early draws as the players were still learning what Martinez wanted from them. Martinez wasn't found out in the second half of the season - he grew into it.

I wont defend what's gone on this season. It has been a shambles, and it was brought about largely by off-field events in the summer: poor pre-season preparations and poor decision making in the window. I dont think a very good manager who is generally seen in the game as astute as a tactician becomes poor overnight though. That's why he continues to get my backing. And he's shown resolve in the last few weeks to pull around a squad who looked like they'd given up.

Martinez is learning all the time now. He's had some harsh lessons but I think he''ll be all the better for it.

Let's see what happens next season, because sure as eggs are eggs, he's going to be here...and quite righty so.

Dave.....the Goat raises some excellent points.

(I can't tell him that myself alas, as he claims to have me on "ignore" :))

He does however omit the biggest factor which has landed us in the twilight zone this season.....the individual errors made by seasoned pros which squandered comfortable positions in those crucial early weeks of the nascent season.

After the Crystal Palace game, our fifth of the season, we stood with five points out of a possible fifteen.

But for Disdin, Jags, Howard and Ossie and their lapses in concentration, we would have had an extra seven points....possibly eight because we shot ourselves in the big toe against Chelsea as well.

I have been very critical of Roberto's tactics during Black December but in those days of late summer the football was sparkling against Leicester, Arsenal and Palace.

Imagine we had those seven points we literally tossed away right now.

Even if the rest of the results had gone as they have, we would be nowhere near the relegation zone and in fact, a decent run would from now have us in the European place mix.

That period clearly impacted on Roberto's confidence and IMO this is were the slump has its roots.

The tactics became more pedestrian as a safety first approach was taken to counteract the sheer incompetence of players who should have been doing better.

Roll on August and a return to sunshine soccer ;)

Agree with @Khalekan. The sheer incompetence displayed by so many of our seasoned players beggared belief. Thank God Steven Naismith was slotting for fun back then...and he continues to be the creative heartbeat of this team

Okay give him time, the squad he has now is our best for some time then he should darn well get it playing to it's potential in the remaining games.

One problem with the squad is the large number of senior players;

37 Distin
35 Howard
33 Osman, Barry, Hibbert
32 Jagielka, Pienaar, Alcaraz
31 Kone

This is another limitation that Martinez has to take into account in his team selection. It must be difficult for these players to play in a Europa League match on a Thursday and compete at the weekend with younger players who play just once a week.

And it would be difficult - and expensive - to replace them, especially over a short period.

He did bring in 3 of those in and offer new contracts to another 3.

It's at least partly a self made problem.

Only 3 of those players are first choice though. Think people worry too much about replacing the older members of the squad. Replace 2/3 of them in the summer and we'll have a pretty young squad.
