Struggling BA asks 40,000 staff to work for nothing in desperate fight for survival | Mail Online

British Airways boss Willie Walsh is asking his 40,000 staff to work for nothing to save the airline.
The astonishing plea comes as BA faces what Mr Walsh says is a 'fight for survival'.
The company has written directly to its 40,000 employees asking them to volunteer for up to four weeks of unpaid work.

Mr Walsh announced last week that he would work unpaid for the month of July - forgoing £61,000 in salary. His chief financial officer Keith Williams is also working unpaid for the month.

What a liberty, im fairly sure most of the other staff wouldnt mind missing a months pay if they had been paid 670k for the other 11 months..................

Depends, if I loved the job, could manage without the wages & felt it was genuinely going to secure my long term future then I probably would. I'd try to make an agreement where I was paid it some time in the future when the finances of the company got better though

I would tell him where to go!

Not fair to ask people to struggle coz he cant run a business properly. I could understand if the majority were pilots on big 150k odd salaries but most will be gate staff / stewards on 20k a year.

Not fair. Hope the staff go on strike to show how pissed they are.

Yeah nice one, let's cancel thousands of flights in the mean time.

The thing is, if the company really is in huge financial difficulty for whatever reason, if you can get by without the wages & then have a steady income for as long as you wanted to stay there, wouldn't that be better than being laid off in a time where jobs are as rare as a scouser in the kop?

I'm not saying I'd agree to the proposal, at the minute I don't love my job & couldn't cope without the wages so my current work would have no chance, but in other circumstances I wouldn't rule it out completely

Heard that earlier on whilst in the car. Instead of asking the lowly paid staff to work for free for a month, stop the wages of the executives for a month.

Are you really going to want to work for free in a job you've been paid for up until then?

What a complete load of crap. These corporations really need some Operation Mayhem action.

They have got no chance. The negative response will have a detrimental effect so they are doing themselves no favours.

If they had asked for volunteers to accept deferred pay (pay them at a later time when things had improved) they might have a chance.

since everyone needs to make sacrifices, i'm sure he wouldn't mind dipping into his the other 11 months, and maybe a year back to pay the salaries of those 40,000 people.

theres a special level of hell for people like this in my opinion, one above the judas/rossi level
