Friend, I have found what I was looking for, comments made in an interview in December.

“You don't win games by changing the style. You win games by being very good at what you do,” the manager told the media. “Changing only brings doubts. I've been in this situation too many times.

"Maybe when I was a young manager starting out, you would start thinking about it after a run like this but it is very clear — in football you need to be outstanding at what you do. It's not good enough to be average.

“Even for the short-term, [changing] is not going to give you success in the long-term. Are we going to concede goals? Of course we are. Are we going to lose games? Of course we are. But it's important we know the way we want to play and that is never, ever going to be changed.”

Martinez was defensive about criticism of his team in the wake of the 3-2 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday, however, arguing that to base opinion on the last few games rather than the last 18 months creates the wrong impression.

There are many Evertonians who have grown progressively uneasy about the team's form over the course of the first 19 games in the Premier League this season, though, and are concerned that the management is not responding to the fact that opposition managers are successfully stifling Everton's attacking enterprise.

“I respect that people's opinions and pundits' opinion are part of football," Martinez continues. "I will allow the results to speak for themselves. I admire it when a critic comes out after a positive result and gives negative criticism, not the other way around, because not everything is good when you win and not everything is bad when you lose. There is more to it.

“Our style was very successful last season, giving us the biggest points tally in the Premier League in the history of our football club. I'm very much aware of the needs of the British game. I have been here long enough and I'm not someone who works in percentages. I don't work on having a good defensive record to win

“We work on other aspects and I like to have the talent that wins football games and to try and build something that will allow the football club to compete against sides that have spent a huge amount of money.

"When you concede the kind of cheap goals we conceded against Southampton and Newcastle then you are going to get those comments. But the pundits are only assessing those two games — they haven't got the deep information or focus from watching that team over 18 months. That's part of the manager's job.”

So in that context I have not quoted exactly right but the gist in my post is correct.

Okay so that quote is not as clear cut as I remembered it but basically this... "I'm not someone who works in percentages. I don't work on having a good defensive record to win"

Working in percentages is the football of Moyes and Benitez. Basing yourself on stopping the opposition first, and trying to control as much as you can of what your players do during a game. Moyes percentages were if we hit the front man as soon as possible we have such and such chance of an opportunity and a goal, whilst also meaning the ball is as far away from our area as possible and quickly as possible. Obviously not always, but it was one of his basic principles. Basically percentage football involves low risk.

Martinez is only saying that this is not his way, as he believes in controlling possession and allowing the players to express themselves in an attacking way. Trusting that a defender can make a 20 yard pass even if under a bit of pressure, and that he doesn´t need to hoof it just because thats the low risk solution. He is just saying he is not going to base his teams tactics on what the opposition do and trying to stop them, he is attacking first. There is no way there is no concentration on defending in the training of the players from youth teams up. No way. Even Guardiola and Bielsa are not that radical. No matter what the style you still need to know how to tackle, jump, play an offside trap, shape yourself to defend a cross or whatever.

Now Im not stating its the right thing, or whether it is working or will work for us. Just commenting on that misconception which I think has come from that quote.

I personally want us to go forward with the basic ideas that Martinez has brought to the club. I hope we get through this season without his sacking, as I still think we can only move forward, as in move on to better things from the Moyes era, with a coach like him. I can understand if from hereon in it gets worse and Bill sacks him, but an appointment like Pulis or others who will come in and make us hard to beat will only be a short term solution and wont get us near the top 4.

As he says in the article, changing everything because of bad results is a short-term view and wont help us in the long run. Its hard to stay positive and believe in that when you watch us every week right now, but I do, and hopefully we pull through as we need something different from what we have spent the last ten years or so watching.

Can I just ask something out of curiosity... Those of you that voted for Martinez to be sacked, who do you want to take over?

We're in a bad moment at the minute but for the long-term is there a better manager out there right now?

Duncan Ferguson would be great if come March we're in the same position but that's a short term solution.
Most if not all have no idea.

The problem we have is the chairman he will never sack him.

Don't be so sure. He sacked Walter Smith, and I believe Kenwright will be getting pressure from other sources, not just from Rob Earle and the fans, but maybe a certain Phil Green, and maybe even the bank.

Kenwright and his chums still believe they can build a new stadium and ride into the sunset. This won't happen if we are struggling in the bottom half of the table with relegation being a possibility, and it certainly won't happen if we are in the Championship.

Call me fickle.....but I have changed my vote from "YES" to "NO".

Having calmed down a bit from last night and indeed watched the game on TV when I came home, we didn't play that badly, though the reluctance to deliver the ball into the box is still annoying me.

We should have won and probably would have won but for Mirallas doing what he did.

So it is still stick with Bobby for another while from this punter.

If we get beat at Palace he'll be hanging by a thread. If he follows that with a bumming at home by the filth, then his position becomes untenable imo.

He's got to spend the next 12 days preparing them perfectly and turn up at Palace with a winning strategy, he can definitely call that one a pivotal game.

This.
Voted no but he's got two more games for me. Gutted that it's come to this. Come on Bobby la. COYB.

Have to be honest, don't think this poll was created at the best time. Think there was probably a few knee-jark angry reaction's last night and that's fair enough.

As @Khalekan has just proved.

That's what I thought and that's what makes this poll so ridiculous. Until I hear a better, realistic solution I'm sticking by Martinez.

It's all about timing. I have no confidence in Martinez and I want him to be replaced, but I accept that sacking him mid-season, without an instant replacement, could further destable the club at a really bad time. We don't want to be still looking for a new manager in March etc.

I just always remember when Wolves sacked Mick McCarthy, they failed ton replace him properly and they ended up in League 1 after two consecutive relegations.

Been a big fan of his up until last night. I am still livid! Completely devoid of ideas. The most frustrating 90 minutes of football I have ever watched. Yes they set up to do just that, but we made it easy for them. No risk taking whatsoever. Barkley looks shot, don't think he played anything other than a square 5 yard pass all night. Scared to shoot and scared to try a through ball. He can try to put a positive spin on whatever he likes now, I'm not listening. I think we are heading one way and its certainly not up.

This is the most sensible thing I've read in this thread.

The next two games are pivotal for Martinez and for our season and I'm sure he's aware of that.

Right now I'm right behind Martinez but I'm with you - if in that after ten days of 'warm weather training' we turn up to Palace with two number tens and Barkley on the wing, no new additions and have the same problems - fail to win and then lose to the RS then I will be starting to sway the other way as well.

Massive few weeks for Martinez.

There will be a lot of good managers out there for us.
I would go and get koeman myself but I think he will still be here whatever happens.

You think realistically Koeman would leave Southampton for us after what he's done this season? Absolutely no chance.

He'll be off to Barca after Saints not us..
