How do we improve?

There is no creativity from central midfield. WBA were so deep yesterday that the ball was played into Barry as he was standing on the centre circle, there was a good 15 yards worth of space between Barry and the WBA defence, but instead of running into that space and charging at the defence in the way that any decent attacking central midfielder would do, it was put out wide again, something which WBA could deal with all day.

We have missed Osman a bit, he's no world beater but he has been effective in the final third over the years. Our current first 11 has no creativity whatsoever.

Thing is, McCarthy is not going to add much creativity when he returns. We do actually miss Osman as he is a clever footballer. Not everybody's cup of tea on here I know!

Besic has to play with McCarthy when all fit for me and Barkley or Osman in front of them behind Lukaku.

Mirrallas and McGeady or Peinaar out wide when fit and available.

The word 'pace' is what we really need. Can't for the life of me remembering any of our players last night getting themselves one on one with their marker and skinning them. It's the only way to break teams down.

We don't, we do the exact same and wait for the opponents to change to a system that lets us win.

It's the philosophy, the system, the way forward. Like King Cnut who sat on a throne by the waves and commanded the tide turn, only our king really means it and is making us all wait with him for it to happen.

Loved that post, L4.

Here's the thing about Cnut, though and this is what sets him apart from Bobby.

Bobby thinks that by wishing it, the tide of defenders will be rolled back and our guys will get through to score.

King Cnut was doing the exact opposite.

His exercise by the sea was designed to show his subjects, whom believed he could do anything, that he was not all powerful and that the sea would not turn back on his command, as they believed.

If only Bobby was was as humble :(

We need players in forward positions who are at ease on the ball, Who can beat a man with the drop of a shoulder and thread a ball between two defenders for the center forward to latch on to, Players who can play one two's at pace without giving the ball away at every attempt

When Martinez arrived I thought he would be straight over to Spain snapping up some technically gifted footballers, Ones that suited the style of football he insists on playing, I don't think any of his signings fit into that category

Winger is the big one for me, one with pace. I think Bobby recognised that too bringing Atsu in but it hasn't worked. Hopefully we can do something to rectify it in the window. A solid CB would be sound too. Keep Distin to a bit part role.

I look at how Spurs have improved with the introductions of their youngsters-
Kane, Bentaleb, Mason.
3 players I considered as being acts of desperation by Sherwood/Pochetino- really not good enough
But all of them have really improved Spurs by solving specific issues and addressing specific roles. None of them are played in several positions. They have a direct function and in doing them they are aiding the team and improving as players.
Even Wenger's use of Coquelin to address a particular functional problem is something Roberto doesnt seem to want to do.

Roberto uses the same players all the time, in all situations. Barkley/Mirallas/Naismith/Lukaku/Eto'o all take turns doing all the advanced roles at any time in any game. Barry is CDM, CB, LB, CM. Barkley has had a shift further back also. Baines has been in central midfield.
Roberto (who i still support fully- i feel any talk of him facing the axe is silly. give him to the end of the season) has his system. he has his footballing principles- a way the game must be played. So he can actually picture the system at work regardless of personnel i imagine? To me it just seems rather at odds with what he's doing of rotating players into every position as if EFC are some kind of olden day total football Ajax team.
If Naismith is the best option to fulfil a WINGER'S function at the club at the moment- GET A WINGER, or change the system.

I know this is why I'm so frustrated. It's easy to play as Barcelona when you're Barcelona. When your placing our current Everton shaped players into Barcelona shaped holes, it leaves a lot to be desired.
So if Roberto is not willing to buy players who will address the needs of the system- then change the system until such a point where our personnel can play the system.

Indeed, I agree, it has occured to me that there is from RM an expectation for the squad to be 'total football' players, and that is either him fooling himself or him just trying to fool us.

I mentioned it in the Deulofeu thread, that everyone at some point or other will be the saviour we require, so today it's Pienaar's turn. Having a capable left footer On The Left of Midfield that can pass and importantly time a pass will see Baines back to old ways in no time, giving Mirallas a solid run down the right will open up the doors for Coleman. Time to do what we do best, clever one-two's on the flanks looking to hit the dreaded 'corridor of uncertainty' or work the ball Quickly to the edge of the box for a strike to be pinged into whichever corner of the goal.

What is annoying is that Lukaku aint no Duncan Ferguson so looking for him with repeated looping aerial balls is doing him and us no good at all, Naismith wins his headers but thats where it all ends. (besides the occasional Mirallas nod of the gods)
So why we keep playing the soft sod balls high to the opposition CB's every game hopefully searching for inspiration and a huge dose of luck is beyond me. Fellaini plays for Man Utd now. Not us. We do not have that easy aerial out ball or last throw of the dice into the box option that we used to have. It's gone. He's gone. We need to stop it. Stop it NOW!

Set the players Free Roberto, your naff system is strangling them and sinking our club. Please let the players go free, let them play, they know how to play, take the reins off. Please for the love of the game, for football, for the collective mental torture you have us enduring please please let ther players play.

FFS !

We can dominate the game but we lack something...creativity maybe....dunno

Barely having a shot on goal, never mind failing to score, isn't exactly dominating a game, imo. If a team is deliberately allowing you to have the ball all game long, without it putting them under any real pressure, then it actually shows that it was they who were in charge of the game, not us.

Well?...

Personally;
  • Balance. Or lack of in the final 1/3. Too many players given creative license. Round Pegs, Square Holes. Barkley, or Naismith. Not both. It seems we're trying to play three number tens. Example vs West Brom, Mirallas, Barkley and Naismith - interchanging every other minute, with Mirallas and Naismith constantly drifting central, causing;
  • No Width. Naismith operated out wide and was a 'boo-boy' under Moyes. Martinez moved him central last season and he was a revelation. He's poor out wide... and that lack of width is isolating our full backs, time and time again Coleman/Baines would pickup possession and have no easy go to ball. It's not a coincidence that both our full backs have gone to the dogs this season.
  • Flexibility. We're just too predictable. I admire Martinez' philosophy of mastering your own style and you'll win more than you lose but occasionally, you need to adapt. It's part of the game, adjusting to outwit your opponent. Example. Two defensive, holding midfielders at home vs 10 men behind the ball. Not for me.
  • Lukaku. Any striker in world football would struggle in our side. We just don't play to his strengths/look to find him anywhere as early as we should. Andy Gray called it. Add to having a poacher in Naismith, a 'ball greed' (What?) in Mirallas and a confidence shot Barkley in support (Who had a 95% pass rate vs West Brom, but 78/82 passes all 'safe'...
  • Rebuild. Martinez will have learnt more about his players this season than last. Remove the deadwood and damaging characters.
Getting off the fence for a moment, I think any talk of removing Martinez is irrelevant. We're Everton and with Kenwright, it's never going to happen - certainly not after signing a five year deal in June. Only relegation would see him outcast, so ride it out, rebuild over the summer. Evaluate after the first 10 PL games.

I think yo may be right
We all love the knee-jerk, It reminds me of one of those American dance records of the 60's '( everybody do ) the Knee Jerk' and is probably mentioned in the Wilson Pickett classic ' Land of a 1000 Dances'.
So it's October-ish then... but that's based on the last 6 or 7 games... but what if it gets worse.

The last three Polls have gone; sack? 20's(%) 30's, now 40's

The main issue IMO is confidence - we've got the same team that got us our highest points tally last season, however we seem to be out of ideas...

1. We need a plan B
2. We need to buy a decent winger and stop playing three number 10's.
3. We need a new captain - our lack of leadership has never been so obvious - if you want my choice I'd give it to McCarthy.
4. We need to get our confidence back and that's by finding a way to win.

If anyone of the players isn't up for the fight then show the door, whoever it is.

If you can't take the bad times then you don't deserve the good and that's just doing to disturb the team spirit.
