The fact there are eight teams in the league worse than Everton doesn't change the reality the team appears to be in shambles. The only question that matters is this: does Martinez have control of the situation? No one outside of Finch Farm knows what's really going on, but it's getting difficult to suggest the answer to that question is "yes". To wit:
-Eto'o, for whatever reason, has forced his way out
-The squad has seen an astronomical number of muscle injuries
-Backroom staff departure(s) midseason
-No on-field leadership to speak of. Chemistry in general can be questioned -- just watch how the players react to each other.
-Osman confirmed the team doesn't practice set pieces; Lukaku said the team asked Roberto to play more direct; Garbutt suggested the team might not have been prepared to play with a flat three midfield (and hasn't seen the pitch since)
-The club's record signing isn't much involved, while Barkley, the club's homegrown diamond, has looked lost for months
-The club's offensive output has slowed to a trickle
-The club's defensive record is fourth worst in the league
Martinez has earned the right to have a down year -- finishing twelfth, while no fun, isn't the end of the world. But the point at which leniency for any manager in any occupation ends is when the situation has deteriorated beyond the ability of the manager to cope. We aren't there yet, but sometimes it looks like we're getting close.
