I've often wondered about us going for the kill with a 4-3-3 assuming players are on song. Not much width but otherwise strong.

GK

Baines
Stones
Jags
Coleman

Besic
McCarthy
Barkley

Eto'o
Lukaku
Mirallas

No doubt there's a ton of reasons why that won't work.

4-3-3 seems to fit perfectly with the players we have available, worked great last season against Arsenal as well.

If everyone's fit I'd go with Barry over Besic and either Kone or Naismith over Et'o starting but it would give us options from the bench and there'd be plenty of goals in the team.

This post made me feel so old (I'm 23) hearing the words "Kone or Naismith over Eto'o". You'd never imagine ever reading that haha.

Killed me when we played the Russians away in the EL and my mate shouted at the tv "pass it to Hibbo...Hibbo ffs..........fecking hell Eto'o should have played Hibbert in there!"

We feel about laughing.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Everton should be playing Four-Four bloody Two!!

:)

I'd struggle to see if Everton have been playing to any set formation lately. I think it's been different at different phases of the play. The issue for me is that there hasn't been any shape and a lot of the players don't have the legs to get about the pitch and make that kind of fluid system work.

We defo need some quality wide players in soon, and he needs more mobility in the midfield.

Can we edit the title please mods ? It is 1-2-3-4. Not 4-3-2-1. Education system really has hit a low.

On a serious note i think we lack another winger, mainly a left winger if you prefer Mirallas on the right.
Defence needs a solid player to compete with Stones and Jags.
I hope Kone stays fit to keep Rom on his toes. My preferred formation in the current form would be:

Howard
Hibbert stones jags baines
coleman mccarthy besic barkley mirallas
naismith lukaku.

Hibbert would be there for solidity and coleman permission to attack and cover hibbert when needed.

No for me. One of the reasons we've been struggling is because of how narrow we've been playing, and both the formations you suggest are narrow.

I like 4-2-3-1. All we need is another good winger.

4-3-3 with two wingers would also work.

Yeh I guess us having 12 players on the pitch might help us win some games. That God damn education system again...

I orignally had naismith right until hibbo appeared. I forgot to take Naismith out ;) but hey the referee's standards have slipped so he wont notice :D

FYI im not editing the comment because you well and truly shot me down

We've had to play narrow because we don't have two decent wingers so that's why I personally think we need to swap our attempts at playing a wide formation (4-2-3-1) to a narrow one until we get these wide men.

As long as Barks is somewhere in the middle (either 'true' midfielder or somewhere around the number 10 area), the formation and selection don't change every flippin' game, and ideally Barry isn't picked, then I'd be relatively happy with anything really. It's the constant unforced changing, and players' attitude that respecting possession means you don't have to actually do anything with the ball, that have been causing all the trouble.

The 4-2-3-1 is a very good formation.

The problem is the personnel we have/are choosing to use at the moment. Naismith/Ross out wide is just not working at all. Only Mirallas is effective, in terms of players playing on the flanks.

It does rely on the striker linking up play quite heavily though, and I'd argue it does not get the best out of Rom. What formation would get the best out of him, I don't know, but then I'm not being paid millions a year to answer such questions.

Fair enough mate.

I'd personally just have McGeady starting until we get someone better and stick with the 4-2-3-1. Nothing wrong with changing it up now and again though.

As much as McGeady frustrates a lot of the time he can produce moments of brilliance. We desperately need to bring a winger in this window though.
