From now until the end of the season It would be great to see us go 4-3-3, have Ross, Besic and McCarthy in the middle of the park providing the legs and a base to control the game. A fully fit back four picks itself, Coleman, Jagielka, Stones and Baines. Kev on the left, Lukaku through the middle and a new RW ( Hi Gerard!). Attack with pace and purpose and blow these lesser teams away instead of letting them camp in their own half and look to do us on the counter.

Funny, but when you look at RM's team selections it looks like it's a selection designed with a head-on attacking intent. Then the game is played and we will have just a handful of meaningful attacks and just one or two shots.

Sadly this would be something Rodgers would play. I would love us to play a 4-3-3 and go for pace up top but martinez loves this slow build up.

Sadly lukaku would bang us 20 in that system

that is an excellent point.

The slow-paced stuff was exactly the way Rodgers was playing it in his first season or so at Anfield. He had the sense last season to radically change it and the RS then played one or two nothing passes but then looked to hit the front runners.

Don't know if this has been mentioned: taken from Martinez's press conference

Roberto Martinez remains convinced his Everton side have what it takes to achieve their ambitions despite a troubling run of league form.

The Blues have struggled to gain any kind of momentum in domestic competition, especially compared to their European adventures, but Martinez knows he has the personnel and the know-how to steer Everton back on track, starting at Hull City on New Year's Day.

And he has vowed to keep faith with the style of play that has served the Club well throughout its history – instead dedicating himself to improving how his players employ that approach.

“People can have their say in a debate and that is just healthy,” said the Blues boss. “The style has nothing to do with winning or losing – it’s how good you are in that style.

“Our philosophy represents Everton. It goes back to the incredible figures that have been special people and custodians of the Club. Our style is what is going to make us successful in the future. Now we need to be good at it.

“It doesn’t matter what style you do, if you are not strong in both boxes you are going to find it difficult to get consistent results. At the moment we are in a situation where we have been losing too many games and we need to correct that. There are reasons for it but none of those is the style – it’s how you play that style.”

Martinez also admits that his squad have lost a little of their enjoyment in deploying that approach and is working to ensure that returns as soon as possible.

“We need to find that enjoyment of playing in the league again,” he added. “I don’t think we have been enjoying our football as a team. The way we are as a group, we want to be positive, break teams down and have control of the game – you need to enjoy your football to be able to do that. We need to get that back.

“When you become a bit negative you are attracting other aspects to go your way. We had major calls go against us, but I just think we have to focus on all the good things that we have in this squad. We have some outstanding footballers and some young players with incredible potential and now is the moment to allow them to enjoy their football and produce results.”

To me it sounds like he's sticking with his philosophy and putting the blame onto the players to fix it at both ends. He's adamant it's going to work.

In other words : it's not the style of play thats the problem but the fact the players he has cannot play the style he wants them to play when opposition players put them under pressure.

So change the style until you can change the players you utter berk. Then when you've got players who can play your style, play it.

“But there are reasons for it and none of them are the style – it’s how you apply the style.”

“I’m very much aware of the needs of the British game,” said Martinez, who side played more long balls (2,239) than every other top-flight side last season barring Aston Villa and Southampton according to new figures

That can't be right surely?

Clearly the way to do this is to put wigan players in (robles, alcaraz, kone, mccarthy) and wigan standard players (mcgeady) and he can drop us in to the Championship, Wigan style.

"Not my fault the players can't play my style" - this is Rodgers levels of arrogance and delusion and will be setting alarm bells off at L4

I keep seeing people say this and it's driving me mad. Robles and Alcaraz are back-ups being forced to play due to injury, and Alcaraz at least is doing a perfectly fine job of it. Koné had an awful awful injury period, has worked for over a year to get back up to fitness to play for Everton, has looked great since coming back and rewarded our patience with a goal 5 minutes into his first start. McCarthy is possibly the player of the season so far, discounting injuries.

Stop slagging off the Wigan players in the side to try and make a crap point, basically.

“Our style is very clear,” he said. “Our style was very successful last season, giving us the biggest points tally in the Premier League in the history of our football club.

“I’m not someone who works in percentages. I don’t work on having a good defensive record to win things
. We work on other aspects and I like to have the talent that wins football games" “You don’t win games by changing the style,” said the Spaniard. “You win games by being very good at what you do. Changing only brings doubts.

I’ve been in this situation too many times. Maybe when I was a young manager, starting out you would start thinking about changing after a run like this. “Are we going to concede goals? Of course we are. Are we going to lose games? Of course we are. But it’s important we know the way we want to play and that is never, ever going to be changed"

Living off last year; like some on here

Doesn't believe in having a good defence; like building a house without foundations

Admits he's been in this situation before, yet still sticks by his method; obvioulsy it doesn't work

We are going to concede more goals and loose more games, but as long as we keep that ball and pass it round its, all good

Thanks Roberto

People really need to wake up! Conceding the second most amount of goals in the league is relegation material and extremely alarming, especially when you look at Martinez' record and see that it is the norm for his sides.

And with regards to style of play, the reason everyone is moaning at the match, and the reason why the atmosphere at Goodison is the worst it has ever been, is because the brand of football on display IS ABSOLUTELY CACK!

It is boring, unexciting, NEGATIVE CACK, that very often contributes to us LOSING games! I don't know about you, but that is not the brand of football I want to see at all.

Completely agree the football is so uninspiring and dreadful to watch.

Can see there being low gates for the west ham and west brom games both coming up. I gave my season ticket away for the hull and QPR games because I couldn't be bothered rushing back from work to freeze my nuts off watching the garbage that is being served up.

my word, this is Martinez-Rodgers Syndrome in full swing here

Let's just repeat his Wigan mistakes for a second time and see where it gets us
