Roberto Martinez discussion

We've been on the telly quite a lot recently so I've had a good look at how we are doing and, having considered it carefully, my opinion is that we are rubbish. Too easy to beat despite doing the odd thing pretty well. We remind me of the Wigan Athletic of a couple of seasons ago.......

His desperation was shown in the line up. All change and big names dropped.

We're going to be even more desperate now. Can only hope we find a way out of it but any more performances like that and you know what will happen. Evertonians will tolerate a lot of things but their team showing no fight is never accepted.

Let's hope we and he can find a way out of it. Soon.

I refuse to believe that last season was a fluke, you can't fluke our highest highest points total. However, we don't look like the same team as last season, whether that be down to Bobby, or the players putting in toothless performances, I'm not sure. However, something needs to change, ASAP!

He inherited a very good team which he managed to strengthen with some astute signings.

We've lost our defensive organisation this year which I think is down to a combination of coaching and the system we play.

Needs to grow a pair and get active in the market. Get rid of some of the deadwood - Distin, Alcaraz, Pienaar, McGeady - and buy a centre half and winger.

Brave call with the team today but it was too drastic a change.

Etoo either plays in the centre or on the bench.

Baines was wasted in midfield.

Barry looked shagged.

Barkley has zero confidence.

One positive though was Arouna Kone who actually looked like a striker.

This.

A defeat in the next game will be enough for me. I can understand 'blips' in form, but this is now nearly halfway through the season so its clearly more than a blip. This squad is good enough to be fighting for top 4, so the blame sits firmly with the manager. If we were playing well but losing by the odd goal then I would say 'hang on in there', but we look clueless.

The worst thing and most worrying aspect is there appears to be very little fight in the players. I had a few bones to pick with Moyes but his Everton teams always put in a shift and were disciplined. I think Bobby frailties are there for all to see now. Tactically he is all over the place at the moment to the point where there is no discipline in our shape. Players are second guessing passes and movement, and the defence is shot in terms of confidence because Bobby's insists on building from the back at all times. If he changed it up now and again and had the goalkeeper distribute it quickly to Coleman or Baines rather than the usual pattern of move it to the CBs, to the DM, to the RB, to the CB, to the other CB blah blah.

And his team selections are becoming odd. Barkley for instance is most effective running at players and giving little pass and gos, but he is lost on the wing and behind striker doesn't work because the play is behind him most of the time. I'd have Besic, McCarthy and Barkley in the middle everyday of the week but he insists on rotating the life out of the centre midfield. Don't get me started on set-pieces either.

Another aspect is we try and play through defences and more often than not attacks break down - and we wonder why Lukaku goes missing. What happened to getting the ball behind the defence and picking a cross, which is what Lukaku thrives on. Its just all wrong.

Superb post. Agree with every word.

Every single aspect whether in attack or defence is a complete shambles. The players are now unable to even complete a simple 5 yard pass without putting the team under pressure.

The obsession with Barry is ridiculous. He's 33 years old and he's the first name on the team sheet FFS.

These individual mistakes are down to the players not being good enough to do what Martinez is asking for. Why persist with it?

Absolutely.

McGeady was the villain of the piece for their second goal but why the heck does Martinez insist on this ridiculous tippy tippy football out of the box?

That is how City got their penno as well.

Clear the ball away as far as you can in those circumstances......instead the defender rolls the ball to McGeady who had been pretty grim apart from his pass to Seamus for the opener.

The problem with Roberto Martinez and his ilk is they are all re-inventing the wheel.

Half a blooming century ago my games master in primary school was telling the centre half in the school team never to try owt fancy in the box......just get the ball to safety.

That advice was sound then and it is still sound now.....no matter what level you play at.

Too darned clever by half is Señor Martinez.

We played like schoolboys today giving the ball away and bunching in the middle with no movement.
Why is eto'o playing midfield?
Martinez does not change anything its the same every match and we just keep getting beat.
We have some brilliant players but the manager and his tactics are taking us down the league.

Next match I'd like to see energy and fight in the team.
Hopefully Stones and Jagielka are fit or at least one of them.

Robles
Coleman Stones Distin or Jagielka Baines
Mirallas McCarthy(if fit) Besic Oviedo
Kone Lukaku

Subs: Griffiths, Browning, Garbutt, Barry, McGeady, Naismith, Etoo,

Never thought I'd say it but souness was 100% spot on there. Needless over playing is costing us goals week in week out. Individual mistakes are costing us goals every game because of this over playing from the back. Think last season we were a combination of Moyes team and a Martinez team. This season were 100% a Martinez team. Looking at the fixtures last week thought our next victory won't come until west brom, hopefully I'm proved wrong but looking unlikely

Maybe I should of expected that but to be honest we are a lot worse than I realised. Newcastle are possibly the most unbalanced team in the league and yet we've just surrendered possession willingly. We had the perfect start and rather than pushing on and imposing ourselves on the game we've dropped deep, invited pressure and paid the price.

I don't want Martinez to be sacked because I have faith he will turn it around but he's looking a little out of his depth at the moment. He's the same as a lot of other managers (the biggest example coming from across the park) in that when things aren't going his way he struggles to adapt and looks a bit clueless.
