Tim Howard

Hope he does, needs a few games before he can be judged properly
Can't believe some of the comments i've read on him.

As if any goalkeeper in the world can come in for one game without any previous games behind him and look amazing.

Every keeper needs time to get reactions up, and that takes proper game time. Once he has that he'll be decent.

I know, you'd think he had committed a murder on the field the way some people go on about him. Considering the mistakes howard constantly makes, joel at least deserves a fair crack at it without getting constant [Poor language removed] from the fans, no wonder he looks like he has no confidence

My dad was a non-league goalie (for St Domingo no less). I was a goalie too. I like to think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to goalkeeping.

I'm going to say it - Tim Howard isn't the worst goalie in the world. Actually, he's ok. The problem, I feel, is that goalies aren't taught to catch anymore, they punch and parry. While these techniques are fine if that's all you can do in a particular situation, I was taught to always catch if possible. It's endemic of goalkeeping and I wonder if the coaches should be scrutinised on this point.

His positioning is ok, and this is what makes him a decent shot stopper but his distribution could do with some work. Neville Southall (and Peter Schmeichel) could set up goals from just their throws.

I went to the U21's game the other night, with my focus on watching not Kone, but Joel Robles. And you know what? He did ok. He certainly didn't do any worse than Tim Howard. He also seemed to be absolutely massive, with a good 'presence'. I'm not saying he's a world beater either, but he certainly deserves a go against Krasnodar. He's also Martinez's man FFS! Who knows, he may even keep the place.

I'm not slating Howard here, he's been good and may just be in poor form like the whole team. But I like confidence at the back. Southall style confidence. Nigel Martyn was superb, the closest we've come to the big fella, and Howard has done a good job but I feel that at the moment, if someone shoots against us, it's going in.

I grew up on Neville Southall, and I don't accept that we should settle for a lesser goalie than his standard's set - we're Everton, we had the world's best in the big fella, and rather than feel spoilt we should just go and get the best goalie going. We spent loads on Lukaku, so why is the #1 shirt skimped on by all clubs these days?

Great post. Could you imagine the fume if we'd spent 28mil on a goalkeeper? We can't even spend 28mil on a world class centre forward without people moaning lol A keeper is just as important as the ten players in front of him.

What do you base this on? His Wigan performances? If so, I assume you saw a select few. Are you present for training?
Saw a quite a few of his games for Wigan, seen some of his training videos whilst he's been at us.

Know some of the coaching staff who have said the same.

And i've seen a few of his under 21 games with us.

Good post. There's just not that many "World Class" keepers in the world. Courtois, Neuer, De Gea?, Cech?
Buffon and Casillas used to be but no longer. We'd struggle to find a keeper today worth spending even close to 28mil on.

i don't know how old you are grouch, so apologies, if you're not too far away from howard's age, but i don't think it's as simple as being taught to catch anymore. the balls these days swerve all over the place, it is so harsh on keepers. i'm guessing that at grass-roots level, they don't play with these official balls and hence can't really get use to the ball movement at a young age.

you are right, keepers should catch it more though, they weirdly seem content on punching everything away. given how much protection they get from referees from corners, i'm not too sure why they follow this route.

i'm okay with robles, he's very flappy, all spanish keepers are, but yeah, i did notice how he comes more for crosses and he seemed much more commanding of his area than howard is, during his limited amount of gametime last season. i think he has a weakness with long shots, due to the swerving ball, but he's at an age far far away from his peak. i reckon he'll make a decent keeper in his career.

he'd make mistakes if he was starting, of course he would and it would be expected, you don't expect that on a regular basis from your experienced international keeper though. which is what's happening now.

Id like to think robles would play against krasnodar and keep his place...

Tired of the Howard "love in" based on a few top saves over a season glossing over his many weaknesses.
