to be fair, having not seen the offending picture, is it really that bad?

Would people be up in arms if it was a random fella on facebook that posted it?

And can a racial comment from the race in question be classed racist?

1. It's one of those occasions where intent and content are separated by the large gap of ignorance. It's not malicious.

2. Some people would, yeah, but it probably wouldn't make the news.

3. Absolutely yes.

No, it's a nothing comment, jumped on by the perma offended to satisfy their bloodlust.

Another example of why footballers shouldn't have social media feeds that aren't managed.

So to clear up, a black man can be racist regarding a steriotype about black people with no actual intent to begin with to be offensive to back people?

I dont think Liverpool will put up much of a fight on this, tbh. It'll be very convenient for Rodgers to use the issue to draw a line under a very expensive mistake.

He'll be off in January.

It will certainly be interesting to contrast how they deal with this, and how they dealt with a previous forward racially abusing an opponent. Will there be t-shirts at Leicester?

Well, your question was "And can a racial comment from the race in question be classed racist?" I think it's fairly obvious that it can.

To answer your more specific question: yes again, because perception isn't controlled by the agent using the words. It doesn't necessarily mean the individual has to be lambasted for what they've said or written, but if a person is offended by a racial comment from a member of their own race they obviously have the right to say so, although it may be wiser for them to attempt to explain why and educate rather than demonise them.

The hypersensitivity around the term racist obviously adds to the complexity of the situation.

I don't think it can be racist if the joke is told within your group but it is questionable if it isn't - it's pretty hard to accuse a black person of being racist if they resort to telling jokes about their own and to laugh off the stereotype by embracing it - seem to remember Spurs fans wanting to own the term "Yids" in order to reduce the effect of others calling them unpleasant names. You can't insult some one so well if they refuse to rise to the insult - like LGBT now tend to own the rather unpleasant term "Queer" which has, largely, disappeared from common use.

Of course this is just my POV and others might be offended if someone within their (ethnic) group took offence.
