If ever you wanted to compare the management qualities of moyes and Martinez , then Naismith is the perfect example.

Don't wish to run moyes down, but it seems to me he was bought 'cause he was available for free, probably seen as a number to fill the squad, and never playing him to use his strengths .

Martinez challenged him to win a starting spot , played him where he's at his best and now reaps the reward.

Big player within the squad as opposed to being a fringe, gap filler player.
TBF mate, Moyes played this lad a lot of times - even in the position off the forward everyone seems to think he was starved of under Moyes. He was just boiled ***** wherever he played him though. Honestly and truthfully one of the worst players in my memory.

As for Martinez: he played him very sparingly when he first arrived. Only in the second half of last season did Martinez begin thinking of him as a starter. Yeah, he's added workrate to his game under Martinez and seems a lot happier.

Highly unlikely Martinez would of got the same out of Cahill etc...but could of done better with Arteta

TBF to Moist, the buys he made in his last season were quite impressive -

Pienaar, Stones, Mirallas, Oviedo, Naismith, Kennedy (and Hitzlberger and Junior though they were on a free)

Its just a shame he couldnt get the best out of any of them.

His problem in his 1st season wasn't the positions he was playing, it was his confidence! I've watched Naismith since he was a youngster breaking through at Kilmarnock and the one that played his 1st season for Everton wasn't the real Naismith, nowhere near it! I think people forget he had just returned from back 2 back cruciate knee injuries, it takes some getting over mentally and physically!

Always had the workrate IMO. The biggest difference is confidence.

What a goal that was.

Great performance too. He's shown he has so many more strings to his bow than just his excellent finishing this season.

Tbf Naismith was a starter in the first two big games that Martinez faced, game #4 Chelsea at home where he scored the crucial goal and then early October Man City away where he was excellent at aggresive defending on the wing - at least two city players ended up bleeding :-(

Imo Martinez rated Naismith, just think he was experimenting with where he best fit in with the team - tbh think he still is a little bit.

Yeah Martinez defo rated him because he tried to buy him for Wigan, but Naisy chose Everton! Then they ended up together anyway, it was fate, written in the stars and that haha

Even under Moyes while lacking in confidence and being played on the wing for his work-rate alone, you could still see an intelligence about him. Under Martinez his constant movement to recieve the ball, lead defensive pressing from the front or pull out defenders off the ball is a class above, not to mention he is probably one of our most natural finishers in years. I never saw him play for Rangers, but I suspect the latter is the player they knew.

What riles me is this BS "god loves a trier" tag he seems to have from some in the media, he's not a trier, he's a bloody good footballler in his own right.

Naismith is above all possibl y the most intelligent player we have. Add to that he applies himself 100% to the game and never loses concentration - he is in the zone all game. Doesn't let mistakes affect him, gets in the refs face, his opponents face. Add to that he's a good footballer and you have a top class pro.

I keep telling people this. His position play and slotting are out of this world.

I hope Barkley is taking notes.

Its the likes of @davek that fails to give him the respect he deserves. He keeps playing boss and keeps slotting.

We can also rotate him with Barkley and Mirallas. Its really quite wonderful.

This forward line is pretty great. Now we've tightened up at the back we're starting to see some good stuff.

Without this faux Barkley v Naismith argument.

Its Barkley AND Naismith. Together or rotating. Its wonderful. :coffee:

Keep smiling @davek :D
