Roberto Martínez maintains he is open minded about the idea of Ross Barkley playing in next summer’s European Under-21 Championships but the Everton manager warned that selecting full England internationals for the tournament could lead to motivational issues.
Barkley is one of several senior England squad players who will be eligible for the tournament in the Czech Republic along with Raheem Sterling, Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere.
Calls have been growing for England to follow Spain’s example by parachuting senior players into their under-21 squad for the Championships to allow them to gain further tournament experience and though Martínez did not reject the idea out of hand, he did allude to the potential pitfalls.
“We keep saying players need to make tournaments but it’s down to the under-21 manager [Gareth Southgate] to select the players he wants,” the Spaniard said. “Bringing the big names together gives you a better chance of succeeding but the main objective is to get into the seniors so if you’re already there what would be the stimulation and motivation to go into under-21s? It needs to be individual.
“Ross is coming back from injury so hasn’t played much football. If the tournament was now it would be a good chance for him to get some playing time. If it had been at the end of the season, where he had played consistently, he would need a bit of a break. We give too much importance to players being available.”
Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, has reiterated that he believes it would be a bad idea for the likes of Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chambers to take part in the under-21 finals. The trio are part of England’s senior squad but are eligible to play for Southgate’s side which secured their place in the summer finals this week.
Gareth Southgate suggested that England’s chances would be stronger next June if he could select the likes of the Arsenal youngsters and Barkley. His predecessor, Stuart Pearce made a similar request before for the finals in Israel two years ago but Wenger feels that once players have stepped up a level, it is detrimental for them to play for the under-21 side. In addition, England senior side play the Republic of Ireland in a friendly in June followed by a Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia.
“You know my thinking on that,” Wenger said. “Once a guy has moved up to the full national team, you put him down [again to the Under-21] he is never good. Apart from on the selfish front for us when a guy has played 50 games, it is better a guy has a good rest during the summer. But most of the time, when they move down, they are not completely at their quality.”
Barkley is on the verge of a return to Everton’s first-team squad after missing the opening two months of the Barclays Premier League season as a result of a knee ligament injury sustained in training. The midfielder has an outside chance of featuring against Aston Villa on Saturday.
“Ross is really close,” Martínez confirmed. “He’s had a really good period of work and came back on Monday working with the rest of the group. Sometimes you forget how good a footballer he is, how infectious he is around the place. It is too early to see if he will be involved on Saturday but he’s not too far away.”
