Distin absent from training.

If it's true, I'd put all my money on The Mirror being the first of the mainstream tabloids to write a story on it. A good bit of negative Everton news.

On a serious note, if he's not at least on the bench for the next game, then perhaps there is something in this story.

Why would it be either/or in terms of strengthening in each area of the pitch?

Because that's how managers build a strong squad, they identify a weakness and then priorities it over other stronger areas.

The squad from last season was clearly strong in defence, but short in attack, and Martinez used his allotted budget accordingly.

It's really not that hard to understand.

Exactly. And how was Martinez to know that Distin's legs were going to go just like that?

Granted, age was perhaps a clue, but we've had Gough and Weir play for us when they were older than Distin, and neither of those two's legs went so spectacularly. I was talking to a red about this other day, and he mentioned how exactly the same thing happened with Stephane Henchoz. One day a player is fine, and the next - the legs go and that's it.

To a lesser extend I remember the same happening with Ratcliffe and Reid for us.

Another player that needs a stern bollocking is the washed up Leon Osman. I seen what you wrote about me on Twitter osman and I don't like it, same as I haven't liked your performances in a blue shirt these past 3 seasons.

This could easily turn into slate Leon Osman day so i'll stop there.

I don't think they've gone yet personally as he's still got that pace and power combination he's always had.

The difference for me this season is his decision making has gone to pot. Whether that's because he's over-thinking his football as he struggles with our passing game or just poor form who knows?

I reckon he will be back in the side if fit for Villa and still see him as a decent member of the squad. Long term we need a younger partner for Stones but don't see that happening until next summer (unless Browning or Galloway make the step up).

Why has Distin been targeted by Martinez? Jags has been an embarrassment so far this season apart from 1 game and Howard has cost us points. I also said at the start of the season it was a bad move spending 28 mill on Lukaku, starting to think i could be right.

Distin is finished..... OK fair dos.

Galloway and Jags? Why the hell not?

Distin won't have his head in the game (but what's new?), Stones won't be fit, Alcaraz will be as much use as a Disprin canoe alongside Jags.

Go for it - it seems most of us have this 7-game old season written off anyway. Maybe we'll unearth another gem and it'll be Stones and Galloway for the next umpteen years.... just as long as we stay up!

We don't know that he has yet.

Long term investment - deciding that you were 'right' in early October despite his performances over the past two seasons is knee jerking at it's finest.

Just my opinion but thought it was too much of a risk even though he done well last season, i thought other parts needed strenghtening.

I think I'd rather have a striker crisis than a defensive one - after years of relative OK-ness in defence we're finally seeing the importance of it. Goals can come from anywhere but if the defence is shot then there's nowhere to hide, and all the "pretty", tiki-taka football in the world won't save you!

I think we only lost one game during the brief period in early 2009 when we played 4-6-0 before Jo's arrival. That defeat was 1-0 to Utd at OT... an inverse result would have seen the RS win the title, so I'll not even include that one!
