First step to new ownership

I agree with most of what you say, but my source is adamant that it was the connection with Shiniwatra which resulted in the sale of City, and that the Mansoors had not looked with any great interest at any other club in the UK, although they had looked at franchises in the US.

It was the connection with Shinawatra that made the deal happen, and it's true that he was desperate to get out of City due to his wife being unable to get frozen assets out of Thailand. Though not destitute, that problem coupled with his already badly damaged image made it a sensible move to step back for the PL limelight and sell up.

Mansour had a completely open mind when looking at possible clubs, Everton were approached and thats when "They recieved no encouragement to proceed." (Thats from Shk Mansours mouth, to me, around April 2009) He didn't say what or why gave him no encouragement, though the exclusivity agreement makes sense. Terry Leahy was no idiot and I'm pretty sure that would have been watertight. Goodison (in it's current state) would not be a negative, a new ground (or redeveloped GP) is literally loose change to him personally, let alone his family.

Shinawatra is still around over here, often seen eating at a little Thai place in the mall. Sulaiman Mohammed Al Fahim lives just around the corner and has fallen on relatively hard times of late. He was that massive gobshite that was coming out with all the quotes at the time: "Cristiano says he wants to play for the biggest club in the world, let's see if he's serious!" and other such rubbish. He was a shoe-in to be named Chairman of City but his mouth cased red faces so Mansour invited Khaldoon Al Mubarak (childhood friend and well respected in Abu Dhabi) to take control.

Anyway, game day! COYB!

Can you imagine if one of the Mansours friends took over us and went head to head with City ? Just missed out Liverpool and said City the title holders are our rivals, much like Liverpool believed United was theirs - no league for many years but always chasing the same dream. (arrogant twits). Help rebuild areas in Liverpool but leave Analfield to themself, then see how much LFC cares about the locals. My bitterness has no end ;)

Thanks for the insight...I have no doubts about your comments...by the time they filter down onto news editors desks, and even into the hearing of directors, some natural tweeking has gone on( a bit like Chinese whispers). I meet a lot of people due to my involvement in various charities, and some I meet on a regular basis, and its not often that long 'open' discussions take place on a one to one basis. There was the occasion I've mentioned here, an other were I had one to one with Sir Alex for 20 mins or so, and a good talk about Everton with Peter Reid (this was a few years ago and he thought it was 'a disaster'). the other conversation that immediately springs to mind is not for here !!
Perhaps if Bill had been a personal friend of the Mansoors, it might have helped !

Sometimes the stuff that gets said by even reputable sources has to be tasken with a massive pinch of salt. I was once told by someone who was definitely privy to the lives of both parties that ' of course, its not Bills money, you know, its Jon Wood who helps out a lot'

On the East Lancs ? well I pass that every game and never once have I seen a park & Ride advertised or in operation.

BTW, when I said 1/2 way I meant not 1 1/2 miles away but HALF WAY, you know 17 miles, just past Haydock Park would do near the McDonalds.

Interestingly, there was a whisper in 'the business' a couple of years ago that the Showcase on the East Lancs was due for closure, as well as the cinema(different company, I think) in the trading estate in Netherton(just a bit away from the Park Hotel.)

Incidentally...did you mention Everton first, or the sheik? Theres a difference between him saying specifically 'we looked at Everton but there was no encouragement from the Everton board' and 'We looked at Everton but there was no encouragement.' Meaning simply that they , the sheiks had no interest.
