It's still astonishing, though.

I mean the aborigines arrived in Australia anywhere from 40-80,000 years ago. North Africa, which had a land bridge, wasn't settled until only 18,000 years ago.

Even Europe, which is right next door to Africa, was only settled 30,00 years ago.

The fact that as far as we can tell, humans settled in Australia from Africa before any of the other continents which are miles miles easier to get to, is astonishing.

It is astonishing to us, just as much astonishing is that the aboriginal development happened in the same manner as other peoples, same legends and myths, same spirituality. Similarly ruined by outsiders.

But you have to consider different climates, ice ages etc when land masses where joined, the need to escape hostile environments. Necessity is the mother of invention..

Surely its the same thing about how did people end up anywhere?

I mean how did we get on this Island?

A lot later, and by crossing a land bridge.

First people in Britain, when you could literally walk here from france was 25,000 years ago.

First people in Australia, when you couldn't walk there, was 80-000 to 40,000 years ago.

They probably evolved there then?

Without sounding harsh - the aborigines didn't exactly execute the game plan did they? After a few years of realising that the place was a big hot desert they should have gotten back on to their boats and found a friendly pacific island. Either that or pulled their finger out and built/cultivated something!

The Australian region was a very volcanic region, hence there were a lot of small atolls and islands and island hopping by rudimentary boats isn't that problematic a concept.

The accepted emergence of sophisticated society is being pushed back constantly, the first 'settlement' is now believed to be in southern Africa where it wasn't in the recent past
