He needs to show more responsibility before he can be considered for captaincy. In his position he should be more box to box. More assists, goals, attitude, leadership.. He has been very good for us but not great. His energy is second to none though. I doubt he has the mentality to be a captain even at this early stage.

By the way, why didn't he play last night for Ireland? Not that Im bothered would rather he didn't so he doesn't get injured but was just wondering..

Agree with this. McCarthy is our favourite player for me but he still has a lot to work on. He is vital for us but I think the mentality is everything. Giving him the captaincy might impact on his own game cause he has to think about the team as well.

You have to have the right mind to be a captain.

I think O'Neill wanted to give the minutes to Gibson and Woolahan against a weaker side. McCarthy will start the next game

What about Osman???

What about Ossie, too old now to take over the captaincy.

The captain doesn't need to be your best player.
The captain needs to be someone who is vocal, strong-willed, someone who can organise, and dare I say it, someone who the refs will listen to and some degree be afraid of.
Say what you want about him, but Phil Neville ticked some/most of those boxes.

Gerrard and Terry, much as I dislike them, are superb captains in this day and age. We don't seem to have a player who fits that bill, closest to my mind would be Gareth. Barry
In bygone times, the likes of Bobby Moore and Brian Labone did exactly the same job in a gentlemanly manner without the need to snarl at, scream at or get in the faces of referees.

Give it to Mirallas, Man for the big occasion, has no problem showing his frustration to other players, can and will win us games.

Oh I see fair enough. Seamus was on the bench too wasn't he!? Would be just our luck for one of these to get injured :(

Last night was a friendly and MON rested Seamus and James ahead of Sunday's EC qualifier in Tblisi. I am pretty sure they weren't even on the bench.

The likelihood is that 9 of last night's starters won't be in the first XI for Sunday.

I reckon Seamus, Gibbo and James will be in the squad, with Gibbo probably on the bench given lack of match practice.
