My girlfriend says that....Albeit so small, so very small.
Obviously we’re trying to be more expansive and play attacking football and we’re going wrong somewhere. It feels like it’s quite easy to get into our final third. As I say we play with out and out wide-men and I guess teams are just finding it too easy to get into the dangerous areas and get at our back four
Baines has been poor for over 12 months now. Needs to get back into form badly. The last good thing he did was those two free kicks against West Ham. Apart from that the only things of note he has performed are a few clever cut-backs to set up others, and that's it. Liverpool's Moreno did more against Spurs than Baines has done in a calendar year.
He could have a point to be honest. This season it feels like we're more of a 4-2-4 formation than a 4-5-1. I think we should probably have an extra man in midfield. 4-3-3 would suit our players, and if we keep defending like we have been I wouldn't mind seeing 3-4-3
Looked like we went to this when Eto'o came on, which made the defence even weaker. He could have a point to be honest. This season it feels like we're more of a 4-2-4 formation than a 4-5-1. Baines on the defensive slump:
Doesn't make sense to me. We played with Pienaar and still got over run, whilst we had out and out wingers last season and kept defensively solid.
This is alarming when you have players who are all over the place trying to come to terms with their own inadequacies. Baines needs to look at his own game and find his own solution to that.
I think his words were a pretty selfish plea to have someone like Pienaar in front of him as his security blanket.
I'd also say that his focus out wide also omits another factor about the opposition going through us quite quickly: Barkley is a big miss in the centre of the pitch. He's a big athletic kid and more able to throw in with the CM unit defensive wise than Naismith is. Whatever bonus Naismith has unexpectedly given is offset by missing Barkley's greater all round input. I haven't seem us dominate a midfield battle all season.
No, it's not a CM problem. They are being asked to stretch themselves much further this season with less help. They're having to bale out a defensive unit who cant hold their own water and they do this without any significant input from the ACM in front of them.Would you not say the most obvious reason would be that defensively Barry and McCarthy have not started at the same level, whereas last season we just took their good performances for granted.
Lets let them settle before we start assuming there is a major problem. Baines gets asked a question on the defence, and he replies with something that doesn´t really say much past the fact we have become more expansive , and we are playing bad right now.
Positive thing is though, at least he's/their aware of the problem.Baines on the defensive slump:
