Yes, but they aren't strikers, which was my point

When was the last time a striker came out of the youth set up or was signed very young and did as well as Barkley, Coleman, Stones etc?

Imagine if we could be self sufficent in that position as we are in others when it comes to young players?

Lukaku is still young of course, but we had to pay a lot to get him

I'm talking about a young striker that we've either bought cheap or developed from scratch

TBF - I think centre forward is probably the position where the least amount of youngsters break out at the top level. I think that's par of the course for most sides - you seem to get a few defenders and midfielders break through young but less centre forwards? For every Rooney we have had a fair few michael branches. When we are talking about getting top 4 etc then the strikers that can fire you there cost goals. In turn I guess the more successful a club is the better youngsters they can attract to their academy.

Given the level of investment we've made in Eto'o I find it hard to believe he will not start most games. It's similar to a Barry situation where he becomes undroppable due to how much he's being paid. The 40k pw rumours are I'm sure well short of the mark.

Rooney mate so it's been a while, but the point I was making is if Roberto thought we had a striker ready to develop in the first team then based on his handling of Ross/Stones he would do it.

In the mean time it's looking like we have a decent enough stop gap

Barry was 'undroppable ' last year because he made our team tick and our only replacement was Osman. Wouldn't say it was anything to do with wages.

Eto'o will NOT play out wide.

We have Eto'o, Lukaku, Naismith as our primary goal-attacking options, I can see Eto'o playing behind Lukaku. We got screwed over when Pienaar went off on Saturday, mainly because we didn't have a solid option to bring on and was forced to bring on Osman.

But at this point in time I can see the team being

Code:
Coleman Jags Distin Baines
       McCarthy Barry
Naismith Eto'o Mirallas
          Lukaku

However, the could easy be changed to

Code:
Coleman Jags Distin Baines
      McCarthy Barry
Mirallas Naismith Lukaku
           Eto'o

It's good to have a tactic advantage. It's good that everyone know's RM is up for playing Rom out wide and not as a target man, so it keeps the opponents on their toes.

We might even see a proper 3-5-2 with the options we've got

Code:
          Stones Jags Distin
Coleman McCarthy Naismith Barry Baines
              Eto'o Luauku
Step out of the matrix lid

I'm completely split on this.

On one hand it's Samuel Eto'o a legend of the game, a renowned goalscorer and a massive step up in class as far as our previous strikers go. I'm also convinced he's not doing it for the coin but to keep playing at the highest level he can. That's all sounding great.

On the other hand he's (allegedly)33 and strikers aren't known for carrying on at a good level into their mid 30's.

He also is the man who led his International team mates on a strike over wages for the World Cup, which makes me question is he the right character to have around.

The fact is though we have gone from Vellios/Jelavic to Eto'o so as long as he buys into the whole team before self philosophy we have then he'll do well. I'm sure he can help Rom as his brain will still be the same. Good experienced top level player to learn from.

This is my biggest worry about him as well

Eto'o is costing less than Seamus Coleman and still some of you complain?

He's also 33(allegedly) and on the decline. For all the fluff and bluster this version of Eto'o is a far far from the World Class Eto'o who was the best in the World.

Can't blame some for thinking he is living on his reputation.

We'll see I suppose, like I say a 33yr old Eto'o is still a damn sight better than Vellios or Straq so can't lose really.

So we are going to have a modern day great (Eto'o), one of the best up and coming strikers in Europe (Lukaku) and the bloke wearing our most revered and esteemed number is Arouna freaking Kone, you've got to love Everton.

55k a week apparently

Again, that'd be a reasonable wage. Anything sub £60k a week is palatable.

The less it is, the better, not just from a financial view but because it'd indicate that money means absolutely nothing to him and the reason for the transfer is for footballing reasons alone.

Who knows, he could have taken the Liverpool snub angrily (and let's be honest, if they had went for him instead of Balotelli, he'd be having a medical at Melwood today in all probability) and has something to prove - joining their rivals and tearing the league up.

So whether it's a good deal depends on his mindset to me - I'm not seduced by the name of the player in itself, as that's years gone by.
