Poppycock.
The premier league has been on TV in many Asian countries for over a decade.
Have you ever been to Asia? I find it comical that such a comment would offend you when most football fans out here freely admit they are glory supporters (except the RS fake fans). Thats such an obtuse comment it really is quite funny really. If you actively researched supporters clubs in the region I highly doubt staging a game would even cover the costs -- look at Thailand with chang how much is thst generating? If there was interest then another sponsor would see the value and pay FAR more for sponsorship.
Even a simple youth setup like milan and barca have done out here -- there is NO market for it.
I have first hand knowledge of the above.
As for the US, I'd guess you're American and so clearly biased whereas I hold a neutral and informed viewpoint.
You need something to market and thats clearly not going to be the situation without champions league.
EDIT -- your second paragraph is simply a LIE. Historically, what in the 1950s ?!
Madness.
H'ok.
So I'm at a keyboard. Ace.
Let's put Asia to one side for a moment. As you explicitly called Yanks all glory hunters. And you say I have a biased viewpoint whilst you're neutral and informed.
Which is why Rocky is the biggest sports movie ever here. Right? The one about the poor Italian kid from Philly taking on the Champion of the world and losing valiantly? We're totally all glory hunters. Which is also why The Chicago Cubs are an enormous draw. Or why Notre Dame (who have not been good since...the 80's!) are general America's college football team.
You are uninformed. American's like story and drama. The biggest clubs winning constantly robs us of drama. There is a reason all of our sports have playoffs and we generally adore the concept of parity - we love to see the 'underdog' win, and these things make it more likely to happen. As soon as a team wins a few time here they become demonized in the eyes of the masses.
Yes, there are glory hunters. But to act like the entire nation is filled with them is not unbiased, it is incorrect. The New York Yankees probably have the largest fanbase, as they win the most stuff - but they're also the most hated team. And the thing with the US? It's freaking huge. Getting 5% of the US to support the club would be an enormous mind blowing windfall (it's 15 million people). We also have money to burn and love to buy crap. Put the a logo on something and we'll buy it. We're pretty simple that way.
your second paragraph is simply a LIE. Historically, what in the 1950s ?!
Until last year Americans that had upgraded cable packages could watch about 4 Premier League matches a week. Those matches were - Saturday early, 1 match from Saturday at normal kickoff. And Sunday matches that didn't overlap. If there was a late game it would also be on.
That's it. You know who plays the early and late matches most often? The Sky 4. So that's who American got to watch. Which meant that's who they became familiar with and began to root for. Now, Americans with an interest in the sport can watch every single match every single week. This means it's easier than ever for Everton to get into their brain.
In my entire time here most of the PL fans I've met are Arsenal or Spurs fans. Because they explicitly do
not want to be seen as glory hunters and do not want to root for the monied clubs or for United.
As for Asia, fair enough. I am not Asian, nor do I live in Asia. I do find it hard to believe that in a continent of billions that there is absolutely no way to approach the market except by winning all the time, but I'll accept that I may be incorrect.
