Everton transfers of the past

Not sure how true this is, but my Uncle helped out with after-school footy-related stuff in the 80's, and they ran a raffle one time where you could win a signed (by all the squad) Liverpool or Everton footy. He went to Bellefield one week, Melwood the next, all players signed. Good stuff.

Before the raffle was drawn we had both balls in our house, and my Uncle goes: "Check those two balls & tell me if anything sticks out" (that's what SHE said!)

So I checked both of them & noticed that the same signature was on both balls. Weird. I couldn't make it out though. Turns out it was Dean Saunders.

The story goes that the Moores had signed off Wright to Liverpool, Saunders to Everton, but Souness had said 'fark that' & gazumped us at the 11th hour. This prompted the Moores to enter into a gentleman's agreement that Kendall could have his pick of the Liverpool squad for just 1 million pounds. He chose Beardsley. Souness then had to put a 'awww no, you got me, I'm gutted' face on, when actually he was made up as he wanted rid of Beardsley anyway.

I like to think that's true as it's an arl transfer tale I was told as a little kid, but 50% accuracy would probably lead me to keep on telling it.

Re Saunders - I'm sure there are pre-season programmes with him listed in the team line-up.

Signing Big Dunc amidst all the upheavel of the mid-90's. We were all over the place and for signing this guy on loan we were being villified in the press. I remember the lift he gave everyone, despite the pits we were in. We played Crystal Palace away, and lost 1-0, but Dunc played and everyone saw some hope there. I don't think you can underestimate the effect he had at this point.

He showed us spirit in the way he played, and the passion. Yeah, he lost the head at times, but that is Big Dunc. He always gave everything. For terrorising the RS defence and tearing them a new a**h*l* in those legendary derbies, the way he brutalised Utd in that 1-0 win at Goodison, and many more moments.

Fernandes still hurts. I was a youngster checking the red button on bbc for transfer news every day and was excitedly navigating my way to the everton page one morning for confirmation of the signing, as it was all done and dusted according to everyone. Saw the headline "Fernandes snubs Everton". Wounded.

FFS.

Yeah I remember! I was 30 and was truly gutted by this. I think he would have made a great Everton player.

I always thought that was the type of crap bid we made like when we supposedly bid for Shearer and bid less than what had already been accepted from Newcastles offer A.K.A the phantom bid!!
It was a blag bk bid, a few weeks later Rooney went to Man U, if billy liar really wanted to buy smith a few weeks before, what a bargaining tool he had???? This guys treated us like mugs for far too long !!!

I remember the comments about Seamus Coleman.

How they said he wasn't good enough for Everton.

Read it and weep boys read it and weep

I've had a few here so excuse me if this is completely wrong but today's performance against Arsenal has just confirmed it for me:

Seamus Coleman is sh*te. Why do people seem to like him and think he's 'the future' or whatever? Maybe one day he's going to be an decent right back one day, but at the moment he just runs into blind alleys and loses the ball. He's like a f**king headless chicken. Plus his crossing and his shots are abysmal. I'd rather have Barkley and possibly even Gueye there instead.

Yes, he puts great effort in, is physical and always has a go without fear, but that just isn't good enough for me. Of course we'd have better players there in future if we had money. But I think we've got better at the moment.

Views lids?

Edit: I've got to say like, he is great for the money we payed. I just don't get why people are saying he's going to be a great first team regular in years to come.

This this this this this. I've said before he's not been played out of position, he hasn't had his confidence knocked and he has had plenty of time on the pitch. He's just not a good footballer, simple as.

Adam is an over rated, unfit, slow bad card appealing referee abusing bell end but I'd have him over Coleman like.

WOOAH THERE, BOY!!!

He didn't have a bad game at all, at least he was trying. I like the lad a lot but he's not the answer at right mid. We need him at right back sharpish and honing his skills in that position.

Chico there, mocking the vault.

I find that sitting on the fence and waiting a bit before writing off a player pays dividends in the big internet game.

To be fair, it was brave of Azzurri to make such sweeping, negative proclamations about a player in his early twenties. But I'm not brave, and I'm definitely waiting until players are 32 and too weak to defend themselves before I officially declare they're gash.

Hahaha. Spot on. I took that tactic with Andy Van Der Meyde. And who's laughing now? Eh? EH?
