OUR AWAY FOLLOWING

I was there mate, fantastic day out!!

The lads climbing up the floodlights and the stand down the side had lads all over the roof.

One of those days when you knew the belief was back and we were literally on the March with Howard's Army!!

Anyone go to Notts County when we had 3 sides of the ground?

Spurs away midweek in 85 is my all time favourite, remember in the days leading up to it every blue I knew young and old seemed to be going. Won the league that day as they'd gone after that! Reds only came second because Spurs dropped after that game.

Would Liverpool or Chelsea sell out against Newcastle away on a Tuesday night?

Fairly sure I've seen Chelsea not even sell out at Goodison,by the way. Our away support is far better than theirs.

Of course Liverpool would. They sell out everywhere. Not like it's impressive though as they have thousands of band wagon fans. Chelsea are the same.

Don't get me wrong, i'm saying I believe our away support is up there with the best. If Chelsea were coming 6th/7th each season and hadn't won a trophy for as long as we haven't, they'd get half the numbers we'd do. As others have said, they've taken low numbers to Goodison sometimes in recent years.

All I was saying is that this season, there are 4 clubs that have sold out everywhere and Chelsea were one of them. Purely down to going for the title and having cheap travel to non-London aways. Our support at Newcastle, was still better than most would be midweek, and we sold out all other aways which proves how good our away support is.

.....accidently found myself in the Spurs bit, to be fair they were eulogising over us.

i remember a great one at blackburn away, must av been about 93/94, we beat them 3-2, think cottee scored a couple...we had a great following that night. In the darwen end when it was still a terrace.

Classed as a relegation 6 pointer we were everywhere in the ground,Notts Forest away around 77/78 they held top position we were second,Everton fans still turning up at half time we had the whole side pus behind the goal

As much as I rate our support as one of the best in the country, I think that's a bit biased. We didn't sell out all our away games this season as we had about 2,000 at Newcastle. Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal sold out every away game (Man United get some reduced allocations but could easily sell any away anywhere in the country). But obviously that's where you have to take in to consideration the recent success of those clubs compared to us. I think Leeds do very well with their away numbers being in the Championship. They take thousands everywhere like us.

Ignoring the likes of Chelsea, who are only taking those numbers due to success (and they've had a lot of help with cheap transport this season), I think we're better than the clubs who think they can match us. City, Spurs and Villa for example.

I really hope we get some decent European aways next season. We'd take thousands to Milan, and the big grounds of the German and Spanish clubs.

For purposes of comparison, the 2000 we took to Newcastle for a weekday game being shown live on Sky was over twice the number the Barcodes brought to GP this season and last in similar circumstances. By the way I don't believe Chelsea and Arsenal sold out every away game -- sold out all their chosen allocation maybe but not necessarily having taken the maximum available.

Utd away FA cup QF 1983.....16/17k I kid you not!!
Noise at hills borough in last few mins of league cup final replay especially at corner to produce last gasp equaliser
Stoke FA cup 3rd round 1984 the famous team talk game
Spurs away midweek to virtually clinch league April 1985
Villa away Easter 1987
Spurs semi at elland road
Utd semi at wembley

Ones I didn't go to =
Plymouth FA cup 4th round mid 70s
Nuremberg
Rapid Vienna at Rotterdam sigh.

Plymouth was a hoot. 9 footy special trains all laden with huge quantities of ale. The rs only filled 5 to go to Ipswich on the same day. We won & they lost - classic away trip!! If my memory serves correctly we took 25K to Burnley for a cup game in 1967.
