The Lescott money taught us that valuable little lesson.

Now Bobby has been largely successful so far with transfers, with Alcaraz and Joel looking OK as squad players (which is realistically what they were signed for) McCarthy being much bosser than any of us anticipated, Barry, Rom and Del loans all inspired, and McGeady looking like an absolute steal so far. Just Kone letting him down, and even then he'd of bagged a few if he hadn't been out the whole year.

Gotta trust in Bobby, I think we'll spend £25m if we come fifth, and about £32m if we come top 4.
Ohhh I knew he would be good!!!

People talking of sales, but who can we see leaving? Baines, Coleman, Barkley, Jagielka, Stones, McCarthy all too valuable. McGeady, Kone, Robles just got here, Naismith, Oviedo I'd be devastated, nobody will take a punt on Gibson (injuries), Distin, Osman, Pienaar (all age), Alcaraz (both injuries and age). So are we all just thinking Mirallas, who would go for roughly 12-15mil? So a net spend of 20mil will be an outlay of 32-35mil?

Actually, Howard could go, but then we would only get a mil or 2 for him, age considered, which would mean we would have a negative net spend replacing him with a keeper of similar standard.

I don't think Howard will be leaving, but there are a couple of very decent keepers available on frees this summer.

Prices will be seriously inflated in the summer, all of the clubs (Stoke, Newcastle, West-Ham and 'at least we're not Villa') will be spending their TV money while Everton hide behind the monies recouped 2 windows ago.

The World Cup tends to inflate the price of anyone involved.

Prices seem to be inflated every year...

True, but the more money their is, the less valuable it becomes and this window in particular will be interesting.

Spending is not an advantage if everyone does it. Everton had that advantage for the last two windows and decided to hold fire.

All I'm saying is, we should be able to match the net spend of mid table teams on top of the money saved on player sales. By holding off, it allows Everton to have the appearance of spending money when in fact, we will probably be the only club to not spend.

You have to judge the spending in the context of what the rest of the league are doing.

This is the bit I disagree with, because it isn't a competition to see who can spend the most...the competition is about winning games, league position, and trophies. I do know however, that for many on here the only measure of success is how much money we spend on players.

It is not how much we spend but how much we invest.

We could sign 10 50 million pound players and get relegated next year. Or we could spend like 15 million on 4-5 players including loans and finish in the top 4. If Roberto can sign the right players i dont care what the new spend is.

But the minute you talk about net spend and everton in the same sentence, then include the doubled outgoings in your figure....

Spending money is part of being competitive I'm afraid

I'm not suggesting the club spend money they don't have. If you're going to judge the people who run the club, then consistent negative spending has to come into it.

I've never been convinced that waiting until the summer ever had anything to do with better value.

Let's imagine all the player sales money was spent in January in a push for fourth. The board would still have been under pressure in the summer to match other clubs. Waiting until summer has avoided that.
