Controversial shout this perhaps, but if I were Martinez I think I would be tempted to cash in on Mirallas in the summer. We'd get maybe £15m or so and I just don't think he suits the style of play Martinez wants us to play. He's quick and direct sometimes but he's often the one who gives the ball away in our build-up play and is not particularly inventive around the box. He's also one of our bigger earners. I don't think his value will ever get much higher than it is currently and it would allow Martinez the freedom to go out and spend fairly big money on a replacement.
I like Mirallas as he's capable of certain things that nobody else in our squad is but my argument with him is that he goes long periods without doing anything and he offers little in the way of creativity. His pace is important but I'd sacrifice him for someone capable of opening a defence up. Pienaar is a fading force but he remains the only player we have in the final 3rd who is capable of opening up a defence with a little flick or something out-of-the-ordinary in terms of a pass, it's often been him that has changed a game as far as creating something around the opponent's box goes. We have McGeady who is (allegedly) a quick, tricky winger type and possibly Deulofeu next season too, I'd cash in on Mirallas and look for someone who can open up a defence. Lukaku may have had a dip in form in December/January but I'd argue that we also weren't getting the ball to him to give him the chances he needs. For all the possession we have, we often lack the ability to open up a defence with a bit of vision or trickery around the box. Mirallas doesn't really offer this, he's suited to a more counter-attacking side. Unless we undergo a change in our style, we're not really one.
