We really do need Southampton to win this weekend if we have any chance of 4th, can't see it otherwise.

Southampton are a team that is well capable of beating any team at their home...fingers crossed. Cannot see Cardiff doing much damage at WHL but ....

Spurs have been shocking following euro games this season but crdiff home is as easy as it gets for them.
utd seem capable of losing any game at any time atm
southampton are not walkovers but if they were such a formidable side theyd be in the conversation for fourth , they aint

We'll probably close the gap on Liverpool between now and the season's end, but we've left ourselves with far too much to do to even entertain the thought of finishing 4th.

Obviously it'll be the RS but we've got a mega chance to close in on them big style over the next five league games.

And our next five...
West Ham home, Cardiff home, Swansea home, Fulham away, Arsenal home [Absolute minimum 11 points]

RS next five
Southampton away, United away, Cardiff away, Sunderland home, Tottenham home [Expect around about 8]

Spurs' next games...
Cardiff home, Chelsea away, Arsenal home, Southampton home, Liverpool away [Expect around 6/7 points]

Really have to do two things; do our thing at home without slipping up, AND hope these three consecutive away games can take away a little of the RS's momentum.

Anyone think The Europa League places should go to the sides at the bottom of the table as a penalty for being there?

Even looking at the relatively recent examples of Birmingham, Newcastle, Swansea and Wigan, I can see that the Europa League was a huge extra burden, both in terms of squad injuries and all the travel to eastern Europe and places no-one's ever heard of.

Constantly playing Thursday and Sunday and far more fixtures than any of your competitors in the league does noone any favours, It's not as if its a big money earner or attracts players.

I think sides who just fail to get into the Champions League or win a domestic cup shouldn't be unduly and harshly punished by having this competition foisted upon them.

Always remember Harry Redknapp getting castigated for not being exactly thrilled to be in it after Chelsea's Champions League win condemned Spurs to the dreaded Europa.

We need to stop worrying about everyone else and focus on ourselves, we need to win our games and see what happens, working out who get points we're is pointless this season is so unpredictable any of the current top 4 could finish 5 even 6th

This is the start of a 3 match run, where we play at Goodison and Liverpool play away.

Let us all pray for them to collapse (99% won't happen) and for us to win all three (probably won't happen).

Everton optimism...

Newcastle really suffered the season after they finished in the top six. I know they had lots of other stuff going on and so it would be extremely simplistic to say the Europa league was the main reason for the following season's sharp decline, which is what Pardew tried to do.

The other examples though do tend to point to a largely detrimental effect on the following season's performance.

Swansea were widely tipped to be fighting for a top six place pre-season but have instead been embroiled in a battle at the wrong end of the table.

Wigan seem to have picked up form since going out, although it's got to be said a change of manager is probably largely responsible.

Birmingham have never really recovered from being relegated, but their best chance of an immediate return the following season was made near impossible by their good progress in the Europa and the consequent huge fixture congestion, amassing as many as five games in hand on their play-off rivals.

I think if you've got a large squad such as Spurs then you are better equipped to deal with the demands, although their supporters are complaining about their awful performances following their away trips, the defeat at Norwich being the latest.

Most other sides use the same 15 to 18 players throughout the season's marathon and can tail off badly or perform badly throughout as Newcastle and Swansea have.

I think a club's size, standing and ambition, including their financial backing, are factors in attracting players to clubs who have failed to qualify for the Champions League, as qualification for the latter is by far the biggest factor. I don't think it makes too much difference whether you're in the Europa or not, minimal at best.

Has anybody seen arsenals next three games compared with ours?
If they lose and we win we go above them this month with them still to come here

Arsenal are finished. At the very best they will finish 4th. Said it a month ago that it wouldn't surprise me if they don't quality for the CL. Their fixture run in is a minefield. Put a run together and they will be shoved out of the cl places.

I think the [Poor language removed] will finish above Arsenal, in third, and Arsenal will (just) beat Spurs to 4th. Meanwhile, we'll close the gap to 4th but end up 6th just ahead of United.
