I don't know if you think you're Brendan Rodgers young man but playing with four centre midfielders and no wingers is never a good idea.

Be saying we should play Mirallas as a false 9 soon.

If Traore, Lukaku and Naismith are injured, defo.

Also, it's not 4 centre mids, one would be more of an anchorman, and one an attacking midfielder. We play 3 already, bare in mind.

It apears ro be a diamond formation--nothing wrong with that (in fact I predicted people would start on diamonds yesterday).

Issue here is that neither Barry or Gibson would suit the system least not because of fitness levels. I was actualy thinking that if we had some youngsters come through then we could end up with;

Barkley
McCarthy
Lundstram
Green
Ledson

Add in a McGeady type from the bench and the midfield can be changed/adapted to suit the opposition. It's a big IF whether these guys can transfer their abilities into the first eleven but looks an exciting prospect if they can.

These guys would fit a diamond rather than an injury prone Darron Gibson who wouldnt have the engine for it.

Not sure if you were referring to my post?

Ive simply listed down options we have for a diamond built from youth and stated we can add mcgeady there also. On top of this we would have enough players so could sign others to come into the team.

If we did go for a diamond though then coleman and baines arent two id worry about.

Don't think we should squeeze Gibson and Barry in the same formation, the only way I could see it happening is if we play Gibson over McCarthy in a game where we absolutely need to lock down the centre of the pitch more than we need an attacking threat.

With Barry's age and Gibson's injury record, I doubt it's a problem we will have all that often anyway. It's okay to have depth, we don't need to play all of our good players at the same time every game.

It's 4 centre midfielders on the pitch, though. An anchorman is a centre midfielder anyway really.

That formation would be far, far too narrow and with very little pace.

I've said this before, but I think people are remembering Gibson from the start of last season...before Xmas 2012. He then had an injury in January and came back for the rest of the season but for me didn't pick up his form.

He is known for his passing ability and to a lesser extent his shooting ability. However he only scored one goal last season and, for me, he rarely made any dangerous passes forward. It seemed to me it disappeared from his game really but I don't know if that was tactical to do with his role/position. One of my main memories of the second half of last season was disappointment in each game with his contribution to the attack.

As an Irish fan also, I'd love him to come back at his best but his best hasn't been seen in a while apart from a decent showing in pre-season IMO.

We need a playmaker/creator more than any other position this summer I think.

Sorry no, was replying to @FTY

I'm a fan of the midfield diamond in general, but I wouldn't think it is suited for Martinez's tactic of overloading and isolating for 1v1s. I know that tactic has been less effective as teams have (a) compensated for it and (b) starting high pressuring us, but unless RM's tactics change, the diamond midfield would need a change in personnel.

We are also already complaining about being short on midfield bodies so adding a 4th central'ish midfielder probably isn't in the cards.

I fear he may be about to do a Norman Whiteside and retire due to paper-machè knees.

That's not based on anything, just provoking discussion with my thoughts.

To counter the pessimism, I hope he's back soon and surprises us all.

This was taken the other day. Gibbo looking his usual cheery self. The FAI folk were here and released an interview with McGeady on their youtube. Presumably the others were also interviewed and will be released soon.
Imagine all 4 (plus Duffy) on the pitch at the same time.
