Leighton Baines

Redcafe: Should his loyalty be applauded or is he a little bit small-time? I'm veering to the latter. Everton may be doing well right now, but the grim reality is that their lack of resources will hurt them going forward. The rest have so much more to spend. I'm surprised he didn't push for this.

Well we don't need to spend 20 million on a world class left back now.

Steve Brule!

So.

Is Leighton Baines off to Manchester United or what lads?

If not, why have the newspapers been going ON and ON and ON and ON and ON and ON and ON and ON ...

about it?

From the man himself:

Leighton Baines says he "couldn't be happier" at signing a new Everton deal.

The England left-back's four-year contract ends speculation over a move to Manchester United, who tried to sign him last summer.

And the priority now is success with Everton as they aim to stay competitive at the top end of this season's Premier League.

"I am delighted to have agreed the new deal," he told the club website. "I am very happy at Everton and always have been. It's a fantastic football club and I am excited about what we can achieve here in the next few years.

"I have a great relationship with the chairman and also the manager, the staff, the rest of the lads and, of course, the supporters. I've loved every minute of being here since I first joined in 2007 and I couldn't be happier.

"I've never been one to relish the limelight so I suppose I'm glad that the speculation will go away now."

Everton are within a point of the top four and have an FA Cup fifth-round tie against Swansea in the offing in Roberto Martinez's first season.

Baines said: "There is a really confident buzz about the place just now and that's being reflected in our performances.

"We're well-placed in the Premier League, we're in the fifth round of the FA Cup and although we've got a few injuries, we feel as though we are ready for every challenge.

"The ambition is to bring some success to the club. That's what all the lads want and that's what we're all working together for.

"The Everton fans deserve success and I am just happy to be in the privileged position of being able to try and provide some for them."

So in other words he turned down Manchester United. Because he likes Everton and thinks that's a better prospect to win stuff.

Haha. Redcafe will be furious.

So what I'm about to post is all speculation, but I wonder if Oviedo's injury had anything to do with this. The timing may be a coincidence, but it could be that seeing Oviedo go down with a long term injury, Baines realized he still has work to do here, there are more challenges for him at Everton that he needs to overcome.

I think that watching Oviedo's reaction to the injury has affected the team profoundly, the fact that he was stretchered off the pitch telling the other players to go on and win it. Recently I've been seeing a lot of posts about how Martinez's approach makes it feel like the club is more of a family, something that's been said for ever but not always appeared so in practice.

Baines is undoubtedly a very important player, but his importance increased ten-fold when Oviedo went down. I think it's possible Baines may have planned to re-sign a contract in the summer (it would most likely be more lucrative for him), but when this happened he decided to speed things along for the good of the team.

Leighton, you're no longer just a world class left back, whatever happens from here on out you will always be remembered as an Everton legend.

edit: it's also possible that this has been in the works for a long time (as has been claimed), but Martinez decided to release it now as a lift before the derby. Hope it has the desired effect. COYB!

This has been in progress for two months.

Nothing to do with oveido injury

Amazing how many people actually wanted to see him sold. They would look pretty stupid now with Bryan's injury.

Most top clubs need two quality players in each position.

We've got some good youngsters out on loan too coming through.

Future under Martinez is bright
