Beer, revisited

Picked up this little lot over the weekend, Fifty Fifty Brewing Eclipse Series; never been available in Canada before. A touch pricey at $35.99, but well worth the dosh:

Elijah Craig 12-yr. - Purple
Evan Williams - Black
Makers Mark - Metallic Silver
High West Bourbon - Tangerine
Java Coffee - Lavender
Four Roses - Bright Red

Nice Erdinger, but if you can get your hands on some Andechs Weißbier it's way better. ;)

Bought three big (750ml) bottles of Leffe today, six quid from Tesco, bargain. Never tried Duvel before but will nip out and get a few in tomorrow.

Herforder Pils has been brewed since 1878.

Herforder's been my favourite beer for 20 years yet I've only just noticed this beautiful little fact.

I only get to drink it once a year, as it's only available in Niedersachsen and Nord-Rhein Westfalen (it's a regional bier). If you ever come across it, and you like hearty yeasty pils, I recommend it. It's less tangy than Flensburger, but just as rich, and as refreshing as a Hasseröder, but without being so thin. Bitburger tastes fairly close to it.

Last night grabbed some Andygator from (relatively) local brewer Abita. It claims to be a Helles Doppelbock, but has a pretty high ABV (8% bottled, but draft varieties have floated as high as 12%). I liked it, it's got a good flavor, although some complain about the high ABV.

Any savants in here familiar with the Cicerone program(s)? Apparently it's available in US, Canada, and UK, but I'm only recently familiar with the program.

cicerone.org

From the site:

Why Cicerone?

Anyone can call themselves an expert on beer. But when consumers want great beer they need help from a server who really knows beer flavors, styles, and service. They also want to buy beer from a place that understands proper storage and serving so the beer they drink will taste the way it should. Too often great beer is harmed by improper handling and service practices.

In the wine world, the word "sommelier" designates those with proven expertise in selecting, acquiring and serving fine wine. At one time, some beer servers adopted the title "beer sommelier" to tie into the credibility of the wine world. But in the years since its founding, the Cicerone Certification Program has become the industry standard for identifying those with significant knowledge and professional skills in beer sales and service. The Cicerone Certification Program offers independent assessment and certification so that industry professionals—as well as consumers—can be sure of the knowledge and skills possessed by current and prospective beer servers.

*I don't claim that level of knowledge, although I'd like to have it.

Bitburger's a nice beer. Never tried Herforder though, nor Flesnburger. They do that at my local supermarket though so I'll nip out to get some.
