Chris

a whole wheel of cheese?
Ever been hypnotised?

Know anyone ever been hypnotised?

Know how to hypnotise people yourself?

Fascinating or a load of bollocks?

I've seen a few stage acts doing the 12 people in a row all doing stupid things and that is hilarious but I'm still skeptical.
I saw a Derren Brown show where he was on stage doing his thing and this young girl is onstage after being pulled from the audience. He is speaking to her and laughing one moment, then he grabs her hand and sticks it to her face and in the next second she is 'under', just like that.
He doesn't say anything strange or anything but she is obviously affected and does as she is told.
It's just mad. Part of me still thinks its all BS though :P

I went to a comedy show once and the headline guy was a hypnotist.

I don't know if it's real or not but it was very funny.

At one point, he told his group of hypnotized participants (about 8 of 'em at once) to say the worst words they knew.

One guy was just letting fly with f-bombs and mf this and mf that while another lady was saying "poop" and "darn it."

I was crying I tell ya.

I was supposedly hypnotised once. Not by some conman magician or stage performer but by a supposedly proper Dr hypnotist to try and help with my confidence.

All he done was make me sit in a chair with my eyes shut for 20 mins and imagine myself falling asleep. He then spent 20 minutes telling me i will be more confident.

I was fully aware what was going on throughout all of it. Whether you are supposed to be or not i dont actually know. Needless to say i thought it was all a lod of bollocks when he done it so certainly do when people do it on stage.

Just a set up and part of the show.

question is though, would you have been confident enough to tell us that before ? confident enough to question it all when you wouldve just gone alomg with it all before.

A mate of mine who did a Psychology masters read a lot of research on hypnotism. I remember two things he told me. Firstly not everyone can be hypnotised - apparently degrees of susceptibility vary enormously. And the line about it not being possible to get anyone who's under to do anything dangerous is completely untrue.

What worries me is how can we know for sure we haven't already been hypnotised?

I'm looking for a book that discusses the subject. I've read around the net and your mates theory does seem to the be the general vibe.

this could be complete bullshit, but haven't you ever had those "what the [Poor language removed] was i thinking when i did that" moments ( i don't mean just the ones alcohol played a role in ;)) is it possible that random things can put us in mildly hypnotic states where we're more suggestible than we normally would be?

You don't need to be in a hypnotic state to be open to suggestion. Your subconscious mind will notice prompting and direction even if you actively do not notice it. Your subconscious will then prompt your active brain to select choices based upon the suggestions given. You will think it was free will but it wasn't, it was a calculated decision, you were just not actively part of the decision process :)

PR companies, Casinos etc use techniques like this to get messages across to consumers/customers. It's not illegal though and I guess mostly harmless.

Stage magicians and mind readers have also been using techniques like this for years.

Derren Brown's "Tricks of the Mind" covers it quite in depth for a bit of mong reading.

Yeah I've read that a while ago. Not a bad read but nothing more than skimming the surface of certain things really. I want an academic/scientists view of it all :)
