The only respect with which money is truly overriding is being able to cope with player sales. We could build a fantastic young talented team and have it dismantled by rich clubs bidding at prices we can't turn down. Say heaven forbid - although I think we all secretly know it's likely - at some point in the future we get a £40m bid for Ross Barkley, well as great as he is we're not really in any position to turn such a sum down, especially if he wanted to go. The crucial element is being able to replace him with 2 or 3 players who can contribute the same or more than he did.
Martinez has proved, this summer at least, he is more than capable of this. Losing Fellaini has only been a positive thing for us. We've vastly improved and we're still in the green.

I'm optimistic for the future. This really is an unfair game, but I think we are the best placed of all the poor clubs to really challenge the closed shop at the top.

Being encouraged to do something different and expressive rather than play to a rigid system is a breath of fresh air. I lost count of the amount of times Barkey lost possession in the final third by trying to take one too many on rather than play someone in, but that's the way he is goign to learn as well as get better technically. The whole Moyes straightjacket way of playing was effective and at times good to watch, but now we have a manager who might not win us trophies but will bring back the School of Science.

I have to be honest, I don't agree with this...I rather wanted us to continue the Moyes straightjacket way of playing, because, you know, I'm really going to miss all those trophies that Moyes won...

Anybody seen what he does when we score? I know he'll rarely go all Moyes doing donkey leaps with his fists in the air but wouldnt mind seeing some passion out of him! He can't be cool all the time? b)

I was too. I was in a pissed up Lower Gladys end there was very little moaning other than reactions to some of Naismiths wasting of posession in the final third.

I hope he does keep going the way he wants even if we lose a couple and the crowd want the ball pumped into the box.

It wasn't brilliant and to be honest it's infuriate me, small-minded bells groaning when it's not launched. But it could have been alot worse, I think maybe Martinez was worried it could be worse. And I think it is slowly dissipating. We sing about knowing our history, but this is the School of Science long before it was the Dogs of War and I think people need to remember that. No-one wants mistakes like Howard's and I think we are limited because Jags, Distin and Howard are all poor with the ball at their feet, but it's ridiculous to say or feel like there's no purpose to the passing. The intention is not to keep it in our own half for the sake of it but to wait for just enough space for a good forward pass to be made.
I would like to see more of Alcaraz, as I think he will be well suited to doing this, John Stones too. Obviously - and even Martinez agrees - good defenders are good defenders. Building from the back can be aided by a great footballing centre back but you'll never avoid being under the cosh completely and when its like that you really, really want men like Jags and Distin in the trenches with you
 
I'll put my hand up & admit, I wasn't thrilled by his appointment...but he's growing on me. Especially when I see this...
