Is it a case of Cahill or Fellaini?

Fellaini has settled into the side now and seems set on becoming a crowd favourite. Cahill by contrast has struggled this season and the game passed him by yesterday.

Is it time to pick one or the other in the side?

nope they can both play no worries... cahill had a fitness test before the game which he hasnt played for 2 weeks.. then there was his injury 1 week of training before being thrown into the team wont help him.... i have no doubt he will be back to his best soon

has this question come up because of yesterdays game? I reckon Moyes will want to play them together, just that they haven't had a chance to yet.

cahill has been suspended, and fellaini is about to be suspended. Wait 1 month and ask the question again.

I think it's circumstance rather than a deliberate decision by Moyes.

Depends on the system really, I believe. In a 4-5-1 the problem isn't really accomadating Cahill and Fellaini, but the lack of a deep lying midfielder.
Think if we play like this:
............Fellaini....Rodwell/Castillo/newDM

Arteta.....................................Pienaar

.....................Cahill.............................

It should be possible to fit both players in.

However, in a 4-4-2 it's much more difficult, as I believe Cahill and Fellaini as a central midfield pairing, don't offer enough protection to the back four. So, and it pains me to say, as I'm a very big fan of Tiny Tim, in a 4-4-2 I'd opt for Fellaini, as I think he's better equipped to play in that system.

Yeah 4-5-1 shouldn't be a problem, Timmy can play just behind the striker in an advanced role and Fellaini can sit in the middle going up and down the pitch.

But 4-4-2 i really wouldn't want both of them on the pitch, in fact i'd prefer Fellaini.

As much as i love Cahill and every thing he has done for the club it might be worth thinking about selling him. He is injury prone and as he gets older is only gonna lose his effect on games. The simple answer is, i watched them both yesterday, they both make the same runs, they are infact the same player. They both cant play, 1 of them has to GO!!!!

Im fairly sure we could find way to play them both tho, its just a matter of learning each others game and possibly adjusting runs. They will both score goals for fun!!

I disagree, they are both Attacking Midfielders, Fellaini doesnt have the discipline to play CM or DM and as much as Cahill trys, he cant tackle, so i consider them both to be AMs.

But i do agree that we should never get rid of either, its about finding a way to play them both.

If we play them both we have to get a decent DM in to cover for them. Otherwise its a mistake to try and accomodate them both just for the sake of it.

I see it as more Osman v Fellaini to be honest. Fellaini plays as an attacking minded central midfielder whereas Cahill is basically a second striker who plays off the front man.

Fellaini could play in Cahill's position though as he did against Arsenal but I prefer him in the middle. He needs a partner though, an out and out defensive midfielder.

So for me it's Cahill/Saha, Osman/Fellaini and Castillo/Rodwell. He needs to pick a combination and stick to it. We shouldn't sell Cahill, that's just bollocks.

Beginning to sound a bit like Lampard and Gerrard for England. I havn't been all that impressed with Cahill this year. If you take the goals out of his game he offers very little. I'm beginning to think he was one of the players Moyes said needs to step up a level and hasn't, along with people like Lescott. He'll have the spot to himself for the next match, lets hope he takes it.

I agree. We seem to put Tim up there and just hope he nicks a goal. It doesn't matter how he plays, if he gets a goal he's supposedly played well. I do feel he needs to offer more from open play.

I watch Gerrard playing behind Keane yesterday in a similar role and he's constantly getting involved aswell as supporting his front man. I'm not saying Tim is on his level but he can certainly offer more.

I don't see it as Fellaini versus Cahill though, they don't occupy the same positions. I see it as Saha or Cahill. Fellaini should be competing with Osman and we should have a defensive midfielder in the side.

In a 4-5-1, I agree with your point. However in a 4-4-2, it's a case of Fellaini or Osman or Cahill. We definately need a more deep lying midfielder playing in a 4-4-2 formation. So it's a case of Rodwell/Castillo or a new more defensive minded midfielder to be brought in. Don't think a 4-4-2, with whatever central midfield pairing, containing Fellaini/Osman/Cahill will work. There's not enough protection for the back four looking at the qualities of the three players mentioned. Think Fellaini/and that Portuguese fella (can't think of his name) would be perfect for a 4-4-2.
