Genius.

Light a dark dwelling in shanty towns for free.

Alfredo Moser is a modern-day Thomas Edison, whose invention is lighting up the world. In 2002, the Brazilian mechanic had his own light-bulb moment and came up with way of illuminating his house during the day without electricity - using nothing more than plastic bottles filled with water and a tiny bit of bleach

Does it have some kind of battery to store the energy? Wouldn't imagine you'd need a lightbulb when the sun is shining.

They have light bulbs and electricity, they just can't afford to run it all day. The homes are dark during the day, as if you have windows all over the show they'd be like ovens, and cost even more to cool down. All the bleach does is stop the water from geting algae in it. The water just diffuses the light so that you dont get bad light patterns everywhere. Its just a way of sealing a hole really, to let light in.

Nice to see inventions like this. There's a great book called Fortune at the bottom of the pyramid by CK Prahalad, and it talks all about the great inventions coming out of the developing world that are doing an awful lot for not much money.

I have solar powered lights in the garden. They have a tiny solar panel on top to generate power and the lights come on when it's dark.

Saw this a while ago and was impressed by his ingenuity. Sad that people have to live like that but nice to know there are some good folk who help make their lives a little better.

shame we don't get enough sun here to do the same. I even asked the local council for free solar panels and they said no, yet south cambs have done it to some of their homes

Necessity is the mother of invention and all that. I personally don't believe in aid and things like that. I believe people need to bring themselves out of poverty without being hindered by others.

I think we'll see a lot more of this in the developing world.
