Roberto Martinez discussion

I think this was the opportunity to try and sign a top class manager that would seriously push us for the top 4. Martinez doesn't really inspire confidence that we have the right man to do that.
I am hoping that in 12 months time I will be eating my words, but I don't really see us progressing much with him at the helm.

Nevertheless, I will not be calling for his head after a few bad results, I am more than happy to wait until this time next year before making a judgement.

While there is an understandable air of trepidation, mainly because he's an unknown WITH US, there is also an air of excitement because I can't wait to see how he does WITH US from a tactical and personnel point of view.

For me, the excitement (if you want to call it that) outweighs any trepidation.

We don't have the resources to hire someone who is proven to push us up the table.

Martinez has a much harder job than Moyes, our expectations under Walter Smith were destroyed. Any change of manager would have been welcomed with open arms.

Now, its a different story.

everton team for walter smith's last game
Simonsen, Pistone, Stubbs, Weir, Unsworth, Clarke, Gascoigne, Gemmill (Blomqvist 73), Linderoth (Alexandersson 45), Radzinski, Moore (Chadwick 45). Subs Not Used: Gerrard, Cleland.

Moyes last game:
Howard
03 Baines
06 Jagielka
15 Distin
23 Coleman
04 Gibson
22 Pienaar
25 Fellaini
11 Mirallas
14 Naismith (Jelavic - 66' )
28 Anichebe (Heitinga - 66' )

martinez has a team several leagues above what moyes inherited. the majority of fans are realistic. A similar season next year to this would be a good foundation

Ouch !!!

It really was that bad wasn't it?

I think we could have. Moyes was reputedly on 65k per week - that is a bloody decent wage, and would have been attractive to a lot of top managers.
I know we wouldn't be in the market for Mourinho or Gardiola etc, but if we are honestly pushing for a top 4 slot, then we could have got someone with a better pedigree than Martinez and made a real statement of intent.

As said before though, I hope he proves me wrong

I'm trying. By god I am trying! But no matter how much I want to believe in him, how much I want him to succeed and how much I want to just feel naturally positive about the man, I just can't help but feel very worried and ultimately negative about the appointment of Roberto Martinez as manager of Everton Football Club. I know there's an obvious divide in Everton fans' views and opinions of this issue, but what about the man wearing the mask like me. The man who's putting a smile on and forcing himself to look and "feel" excited about Martinez, but deep down knows that something just doesn't fit. I know I'm not the only one wearing that mask of jubilance covering a face of concern, worry and gloominess. Having watched the full appointment of Martinez press conference on YouTube, I think it's blatantly obvious that Kenwright is wearing that mask too. Some say this is a time of promise and future glory, with the players we have, the football Martinez' teams play and the fact that we're taking on a manager who won what Moyesey never could (a trophy!), and I'm happy for those people. Others say this is a huge mistake, with a manager that's never progressed a bottom five team which was finishing higher in the league before he took over and now under his reign got relegated, and I'm happy for those people too. At least you openly know where you stand. But those of you wearing the mask of delight covering up a deep down despair, put your hand up and make yourself known, because I know there's more than just me and Blue Bill.

Thing is FS, it's all too early to tell;

you're going on record as not in favour, fair play to you.

If it all goes mike walker-esque, well we can't say you didn't tell us

and who's to say it won't??, or infact what will happen

When not a player bought, window finished, game played and we haven't got to bonfire night yet

I think it's just the equivalent of girlie pre wedding nerves.

sh*t he's making me nervous now.

*puts on curly wig and tash....calm down calm down

No one who backs him are wearing any *mask* of delight. It's a realistic assessment that he's a talented manager who can do a great job for us.

And no one is expecting you to wear a mask of any description: just remain at worst neutral and let him persuade you or otherwise with results and performances.

To listen to some you'd think we just hired the manager of Marine rather than a man with more trophies than the boring plant pot who Man Utd have just made the worst error of judgement in their history about.

Pretty funny how many people on here reckon they're a better judge of a football manager than Alex Ferguson is...

Also FAO the original poster... there's this big button on the right side of your keyboard called Enter or Return... please for the good of all our eyes, use it now and again!!

What you need to do is stop worrying about things that ultimately don't matter. Football is basically froth on the sea of life. Think of all the people dying in Syria...get some perspective!

I don't know what to think of Martinez, there's obviously that level of doubt as he is unproven, but there was always going to be a level of doubt with any of the managers we were interviewing.

I for one didn't like Moyes' style of play (until this season), but it worked. So I'm more excited to see how Martinez's style of play goes for us. I would like to see it go well, obviously.

It's hard to have ambition when you have no money.

If we end up 10th, lets all jump on Martinez' back eh, because of course it will be all his fault won't it?

Honest question, whose fault would it be?

If he keeps Baines, Fellaini and mirallas, but still finishes 10th, you'd have to lay the falling standards at the managers door. 10th would be around the 45-50 point mark I think.

If he sells a number of those, but is allowed to spend all the proceeds, you'd have to blame him for failing to adequately replace these players - particularly as you'd be looking at £50m + for the three.

If he sells them then has to give a large chunk to the bank, then I'd praise him for finishing 10th (though Moyes sold Wayne Rooney and only brought in Bent and Cahill and went from 17th- his fault - to 4th -his "fault"). But I would still give him the benefit of the doubt in that situation.

If Martinez inherits the same sell-to-buy conditions as Moyes, isn't it only fair to judge him by the same criteria? And if we keep our star trio and then, stretching the imagination to almost inhuman limits here, we actually make a significant positive net spend of say £10m, would we expect to see some progress, and not limited to the subjective "better brand of football"? It's very much a results business.

I don't want Everton to be one of those clubs that dump a manager over short term period...obviously if it is a massive decline in performance, sure. Sometimes it takes more than one season for a club to adapt a new managers style etc.

so if we finish 10th, I wouldnt be calling for Martinez's head.

Me neither - I want to see a return to contracts being honoured- Martinez has a four year deal and he should be allowed that amount of time as a minimum, unless another club negotiates his release.

this exactly. I don't know what people want. we have a manager that puts playing attractive football above all else. Are we not happy about this?

No Im not. I hate all this attractive football tippy tappy crap.

Winning football is the best football. Maybe Martinez can provide us that, who knows, but it doesnt delight me to just get a manager who plays "Attractive" football.
