Perspective-the ten years pre Moyes

Our combined wages/transfers are around 14th spot - our average finish is of course not.
We reach a cup final and semi's
We got into Europe repeatedly
We were the first and one of only a couple of teams since to actually breach the top 4 in the sky era
We did this on less than 10mil.. total
His record signing was 15mil which is pennies. Doesn't even make the top 250 signings, yet we are now a properly feared club that no one wants to play against.
You know what.. He's done us proud and it takes a special level of bitternes to ignore all these things and think that one top day makes for a better decade.

Good post.

His record speaks for itself, and to be honest I'd accepted the idea that it was better to remain in a safe pair of hands for as long as the board remained in charge.

However, it had to come to an end eventually, and I think now is a good time. Losing their safety net may encourage the board to finally get serious about selling, and in the meantime it'll be nice to see a fresh approach on the pitch.

Great post. You'd take a decade of consistently doing well over one when we were embarrassment on the pitch; one season aside.

We used to go to Old Trafford and win in the 90s.....I was there the day we beat them 2-0 and Ryan Giggs made his first appearance.

We used to go to Anfield and win derby games in the 90s.......most notably on the glorious day that Kanchelskis ripped them a new one.

The never to be forgotten Sunday in April 1995 when we blew Tottenham away at Leeds in a thrilling semi final.....so much more memorable than the turgid penalty win and the second half capitulation of our two most recent semis.

Then of course there was Watto waving the Cup aloft at Wembley.

All whom were there will never forget that famous May day in '95......who will recall the moment we "clinched" fourth place a decade later, the "highlight" of this more utilitarian era.

To paraphrase The Bard in Marc Antony's funeral ovation....."the bad days at a football club live long after them....the good days are oft interred with their bones".

And the dog days of the "dour nineties" were interspersed with more highlights and thrills than the era about to close.

(y)

Nailed it for me perfectly.

What's the frigging point of turning up season after season with "safe pair of hands Davey" at the helm, sailing our trusty vessel towards the promised land of 6th/7th/8th spot. **** that. Bored of that. I'm not for standing still.

As the saying goes, "better to have loved and lost, then to have never have loved at all".

I'd much rather we give it a tilt, than carry on accepting our "best of the rest" finish and absolutely no chance of us winning a cup as the manager lacks the killer instinct.

We might bomb. We might not. But at least we'll find out now. I'm looking forward to the future, rather than the usual same-old, same-old prediction of finishing 6-8th.

Some good points there, but we have to be careful in comparing performances in different eras.

From about 1996 English football has been dominated by just three clubs - Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal - with occasional interventions from clubs such as the ****e, Swansea, Portsmouth and Man City. We have steadily improved to become the "best of the rest" which given our dilapidated ground, lack of finances and almost invivble profile outside England is a phenomenal achievement. This almost sloely down to Moyes.

Exciting? Not as much as the nineties, I agree. But then, the two games of that decade that really stand out for me are the last-ditch battles against Wimbledon and Coventry. At my age and with my blood pressure I could do without that sort of excitement thank you!

Cant stand the nerves in those games, never want to be in that position again, looking at this year table, there been a few who could do down such as Newcastle, Sunderland, even Villa got dragged into it. This could happen to us next season. We have to remember Moyes had been in total control at Everton and is the man everyone trusted who worked for him.

Great times, we've had a fair few under Moyes as well but you know what, you're kind of ignoring the obvious change in dominance. You mention the cup and how Moyes has failed us, but hasn't everyone who isn't at that time spending vast sums of money, here are the winners since Royles trophy. Bit of a pattern showing there?

As for mentioning wins against United ffs? Take a look for yourself.

http://www.evertonresults.com/manutd.htm

Hardly inundated with wins in the 90's were we?

In fact 4 wins to Moyes against 3 the decade pre Moyes. Probably not a great example, or are games only relevant when played away to a special selection of three or four teams? Are there only 4 games you remember per season, and then not even ones at Goodison?

Listen if your happy scrabbling around for the odd point required to keep us up, that's fine. Some of us just want more from our club. We are Everton after all.

Personally I enjoyed Moyes ability to take on the filthy rich clubs and embarrass them regularly, City hate playing us, Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool have all had their noses rubbed in it. I find it a bit sad that you missed the positives of the decade just gone, and instead moaned and whinged your way through it, its been a massively enjoyable rise from obscurity to being Everton again. One worth remembering for all the right reasons.
We won't forget this decade, we won't fail to see the improvement that happened here in the future, the difficulties Moyes faced will be well documented and remembered because this is Everton, and Evertonians know their history.
One cup does not equal a good 10 years. A good 10 years with no cup doesn't equal a great 10 years. But to move from dross to boss with little money against a backdrop of billionaire opposition is something anyone without a strange hatred for Moyes can get behind and be proud of. I know I am.
Everton are a big club again, and that is 100% down to David Moyes.

Big Joe had one decent season, then joined the other 9 years of turgid s**t. We've had nearly a decade of progress.

That sir has got to be one of the best posts I've ever seen on here!

And I must say, living thru the 90's as a Everton fan... It's stuck much more in my mind about how poor we were and how we nearly went down every year, than the memories stuck in my mind about that one day winning the cup.

Moyes achievement's turning this club around, taking us back into Europe, finals/semi-finals and consistent top 8 finishes over an 11yr period far outways a cup win.

In the Moyes era only the big spenders have won the three trophies available apart from :- Portsmouth(FA Cup) Boro, B'ham and Swansea(Lge Cup). And look where three of those are now.

The roll of honours and trophy cabinet would say otherwise. When we look back at past generations for our club, do we remember the season's in the 30s or 50 when Everton finished 5th, or 7th? Or do we proudly focus on the years when the entry reads, "League Champions" or "FA Cup Winners"?

I'm clearly into football for all the wrong reasons.

It used to be elland road and white hart lane that was used as sticks to beat everton with, then we started winning there so it became stamford bridge and old trafford.

It's an obsession I don't quite understand. Do you get double points from an away win?

At home vs the other six big teams we've won 13, and lost 7 of the last 24. I was at a lot of those games and trust me I didn't enjoy it any less because it was at home.

Cheers, the memories thing is a cracking point.
I remember surviving by the narrowest of margins more than the cup as well.. That awful feeling of knowing its all but over and we will be facing some lame team that just came up from the 3rd division, but we'll still be lucky to get a point against them.
Then when it was over and the celebrations died down and we had stayed up, just kind of feeling numb, knowing we got away with it this time but next year would be coming soon, and this time we may not get that vital win that keeps us up.
Horrible times.

I anyone think anyone doubts what Moyes has done for us but it must be pointed out that the terrible seasons we had were more down to the god awful mangers we had. (Big Joe is one the same level as Moyes imo an Kendell should never of come back). No wonder Moyes looks so good when u compere him to Mike Walker and Walter Smith!
