"What is it with David Moyes and strikers?"

he came very close to signing jordan rhodes , wouldnt suprise me if he went for him again , if hes still here start of the season

Yakubu is the best striker we've had at the club under Moyes, dissapointed at the way he left, he's still slotting.

Look at the strikers we've had under Moyes though, hardly world beaters were they?

Saha was on the decline, Beattie and Johnson were average at best as they've proved since they've moved on, Yakubu had a horrible injury that he's never properly recovered from.

Jelavic has been getting chances recently but not putting them away. I think that he's the best we can realistically afford, he's been unlucky too this season.

To a degree. Jelavic and Yakubu are both 'fox in the box' players. They need their team mates to create chances and they have the knack of finishing them off. Very often our striker is isolated as we defend deep and the only way they can score is to pick up a hoofball, beat both centrebacks and then race in on the 'keeper. If you put Jelavic in any of the teams above us he would probably score goals.

How much ould Blackburn sell him for? They bought him for like £8m.

They'd want double. Or near £10million.

The kid has still been slotting for Blackburn.

Too much of a gamble for me for that price.

We shouldve went for Darren Bent in January imo.

He didnt slot for us tho.

First Season apart.

This is true. Got an injury, came back gash, left us and went on to be ace for Blackburn. You'd have to be a fly on the wall at Finch Farm to know why I suppose. But he was fantastic at what he did, when he did it.

Not my words, but I share the concern.

The Guardian's football writers I think describe the situation well enough:

Yep. Beattie, Bent, AJ, Yak, Jela...even Rooney's second season under Moyes was less goalscoring.

See point 10 here

What's the answer? More attack-minded coaches in the setup? We've had Sheedy and Dunc, tho' I wouldn't mind asking Cottee if he fancies a job as the striker's coach at our club. He wasn't one for running channels, but he was one for consistently scoring goals with instinctive finishing. Maybe our strikers need some of that instilled into them (and maybe Moyes needs to understand that a goalscrounger can ultimately be a stronger defence than a tracking-back striker).

Cottee for coach, Muller, Lineker Sharp.....fill in you decent goal scorer here.

Waste

Of

Time.

You can't coach it it's a gift a God given talent

You maybe though can coach it out of players, nullify it by asking them to do others stuff

Not germaine to my core business the strikers should say.

Looking at the stats Yakubu had his worse games per goal ratio when at Everton

Crikey, and that while he's one of our best strikers of the last 20 years.

Says something...

Of course you can coach it. Scoring goals is a talent which needs nurturing and coaching. Rooney & Van Persie have Fergie & Wenger (and their coaches) to thank for keeping them technically successful at the art of scoring goals.

I think that's why Evertonians often spread the myth that Yakubu performs in his first season at a club and then gets lazy, when his problem is actually a tendency to start new seasons on fire, only for the goals to dry up around February. Defoe is the same.
