Match Management

Match management is a coaching expression. Yesterday we were winning with 5 minutes to go and we could have managed the match better in a number of ways to take the sting out of the game:

  • Time wasting: running the ball into the corners, protracted substitutions, taking longer with goal kicks etc.
  • Possession: keeping the ball to prevent the opposition from being able to mount attacks.
  • Territory: running the ball into the opposition third and looking to draw freekicks.
  • Denying the opposition space: we could have compressed the back four so that they were closer together and brought the midfield back to add protection, leaving Mirallas as a counter-attacking option upfront.

I'm not sure whether we don't do it because it goes against Moyes' purist principles, as with diving, or whether we're too naive. It was disappointing to hear that we've lost 19 points from winning positions so far this season. If we could manage matches better we could be much higher up the league.

There was 1 point where Jagielka hoofed it up to Naismith, unsurprisngly the defender won it and it ended up about 30 seconds later back with Jagielka.

He then done exactly the same thing again.

We barely strung 3 passes together after thr 78th minute, so completly wasteful with the ball. Plus i'm pretty sure after we kicked off from their equaliser Jagielka kicked it straight out for a throw in.

The thing im disappointed about is, when they put American kid on, Moyes could see he was making a big impact, and he did nothing.

like someone else said, We did it to spurs this season and it happens. but our last 2 games last kick goals

We used to call it playing in their half

So who is to blame for this ???

This is the issue. Is it the England International for doing it.....or the man choaching him 6 days a week ???

Both really I think.

If I was Jags, i'd realise that tactic didn't work, and try something different. But he didn't.

Its not just Jags, Distin and Johny both do it, and I have only even seem Gibson have a pop at them. Neville points up the pitch for them to clear it.

With all this, im looking at a mentallity from the way these players are coached every day. They must be told to do it.

Winners win games.

Losers worry about the "correct" way of doing so.

I'd prefer Everton to be winners. Nice guys finish last.

In regards to Jagielka, he looks a completely different player in possession when he turns out for England. He is tactically instructed to hit it long and often at Everton, he's not just choosing to do so.
