Why is that though, people going on about 40 points and so on?
Of course, staying in the league is financially crucial.

But by what maths can one dictate that 40 points is safety? Just traidition?
There's been plenty of teams that scraped survival with as low as 35 points, though obviously it takes more to be relegated with 40+. In 02/03, west ham were relegated with 42 points.

Conversely, the 97/98 relegation getaway was us against Bolton, we were each on 40 points but they were relegated on goal difference.
