Looking at the youtube vids, with his speed and long legs, he can seem to be out of control on some tackles. He lunges a bit at times as well. Maybe that's what they were talking about?

That being said, you can usually tell if a guy is bad at tackling if he accumulates a lot of cards. Fer has received 27 yellow cards in his career out of 131 match appearances. No red cards. Fellaini, on the other hand, has received 49 yellows & 3 reds over 177 matches since he's joined the Premier League. While Fer's number isn't small, it's a fairly normal amount for a guy who plays a lot in center mid and defensive mid.
