The vast majority of football fans support selling clubs, so it's perfectly normal.

I know most clubs are sellers. But most don't have to do mental gymnastics and amatuer accounting before they even consider what it'd be like to have Hoilett playing off Jelly for instance.

See how mad the forum went about the Naismith free transfer, thats what we've been reduced to. How Evertonians consider a linked players is usually scepticism, when it's excitement for most fans of most clubs. That's not normal. Signing players used to be one of the most exciting aspects of the game.

I think Zat raises some good points, but it can be tough to have a crystal ball for some of the free agent scenarios. It can go south for any number of reasons. In a couple of cases (Clyne/Hoillett) their clubs were fighting pretty hard to renew their contracts, so it wasn't certain they would even be available. I'm not certain of how early prior to expiration of a contract you can contact a player without it being tapping-up, but clearly we want to stay above-board in those circumstances.

Regarding offloading some of our current squad, folks are saying we need to get rid of Cahill/Anichiebe, etc. but I don't hear a lot of clubs knocking down our door for them. Tough to make any money to reinvest (beyond recouping salary) when we have to list them at a cut rate price to get any interest.

Summerskin, regarding your summary of our results over the past 10 years, don't forget that at least two of our 'down' seasons were directly attributable to the unfortunate spate of injuries some of our key players suffered. Moyes can certainly mitigate that situation by having quality depth available, but we all know we've never had the funds for that.

The player whose absence made us play better and score more goals in 5 games than in two months?

Baines or no Baines, that ain't my point...the manager can't handle the expectation that our season-end surges provoke and his results consistently show that.

Pretty crippling to hear Liverpool fans say "we expected you to batter us at Wembley".

Absolutely spot on about Moyes and expectations.

Imagine if we're third and 6 points off top at Christmas, he'd be so worried about doing a Spurs from last season that we'd play 9 defenders on the pitch.

Now reading Clyne is off to southampton for 1.5mil compensation.....he's potentially an England right back....amazed no-one bigger got him.

cant believe moyes is actually happy with hibbert and neville there. imagine the money we could made on clyne if we were to sell in a few years as well

I'm honestly disgusted by the failure to sign a right back.....should have signed Naughton + Walker when spurs got them...

1.5mil for the best right back in the championship....bargain.

I think there's two reasons why this type of thing doesn't happen with us.

The first is that a player who is on the verge of a free transfer will not want to commit himself before seeing whats out there for them. Imagine if Hugo had signed with us in Jan at £35k p.w. He'd have done himself out of dough. There's no way his agent would allow that to happen and as Chris said a lot can change in football in a short space of time.

The second that applies to us is we cannot afford to have an excess on our wage bill even for a season. We need to let Yobo, Vic and a few others go before we commit ourselves to paying someone 40/50k p.w. If we brought in Hoilett and Hugo on a combined £110k p.w and we didn't manage to move the other two on thats £10m a season on our wage bill. We can't do that anymore and everyone knows it.

IMO it's why we never go Demba Ba last year, as the Yak couldn't be moved, literally.

I think you make some great points plus I understand the original poster's frustrations. I guess a lot of it has to do with the budgets the club works with. Some of the media were suggesting wages of up to £70,000 per week were being demanded for Rodallega which seems massive for a player who is established in the premier league but has not yet shown he can perform as the highest levels week in and out.

Maybe Moyes would rather put the money to better use than £70,000 per week on a player who would not walk in to our starting 11. I guess a lot still depends on what happens with Baines....Roll on the end of the window.

Could Coleman maybe do it long-term or do you believe he hasn't quite established himself there?

I think Coleman could be our next right back but tbh Neville is good enough there. Ok he offers nothing going forward but the most important thing is to be able to defend when playing there.

He's played right back about a handful of times for us.....which is bizarre as Moyes said a year ago that he would give Coleman game time at right back.

He looked pretty good there from what i've seen, however 'for 1.5mil Clyne would have been a no brainer.

The way I see it is that Moyes wants but Kenwright doesnt give. We need a new owner, and NO im not asking for a Multi Billionaire owner but rather someone who loves the club as much as we do and give Moyes about 20-30 mill a year. Unfortunately thats never gonna happen cause the board are asking WAY TO MUCH for the club now.

Even so I will still be watching the team I love so much next season and will leave the rest in my dreams ;)

We are designed for "next year" by dint of being owned by people who don't want to invest a penny.

The only hope is a great manager who can work the magic of Wenger in his early days continually unearthing gems for £1.50 winning trophies in great style then selling them on for huge money. Repeating the trick to get enough dough to build the best stadium in Britain while hardly buying and still getting CL would be handy as well.

Although we don't have that we did re-sign Mcfadden and it appears the race horse owner Michael Owen maybe coming.

Next year it is then!
