Why are they so violent?

Identity fusion - An individuals personal identity becomes part of a group identity.
We have all heard of group mentality, or crowd madness, this is them all over.
Each individual adopts that emotional crowd state and some just can't control it, to the point they feel they are the defenders of the group, the spokesperson or the foot soldiers which leads to dangerous behaviours.
Herd mentality is to act on primal instinct rather than rational thinking which an individual might adopt.
