2025/26 James Garner

Gareth Barry was a lot better than dependable.

He’s won the league, played countless times for England and will go down as one of the best midfielders we’ve had in the premier league.

I’d be amazed if garner ever hits that level.
Barry was one in a million, he was always a great player, but once he put our shirt on it was like he hit another level.
Maybe he was just taken for granted before.

I love players like Garner because they highlight how some people won't rate a player unless he's banging in 30 yarders or bagging multiple assists every week.

I just find things like that amusing. I'm a simple kind of human.
The levels he's gone up this year has been incredible honestly.

I still slightly worry he's a bit too much jack-of-all-trades master-of-none for the long term - he's not truly elite either defensively or progressively, which makes it hard to build a balanced midfield around him - but he does just keep getting better, so who knows.

He's miles off a World cup place realistically.

May get a cap eventually like Leon Osman did due to sheer consistency but can't see him being in contention for next summer.
Unfortunately this might be the case.

But if we are optimistic, who is his competition? Rice and Bellingham are obviously holding onto their spots, but the "lowest hanging fruit" would be Adam Wharton, Alex Scott and Jordan Henderson. I dunno, looking at that competition I'm prone to thinking he might be in with a shout if he keeps up, or improves upon, his form.

….Barry was a proper talented footballer, certainly better than ‘solid and dependable’.

I said type, not clone. Zidane was a properly talented footballer in the true sense, Barry was dependable in action/s and match-savvy, which is a talent missing much too often and apparently something you don't value too highly, judging by your headmaster's ruler to my knuckles.

Solid, dependable...talented is a given, enough to make a good living/career out of it but I was most impressed by what was clearly in his head, which wasn't a pan of scrambled eggs. I'm not going to get in to a silly debate on what talent is, that's a grab bag of personal truths with no end.

A lot of his England place (and KDH's) just depends on how we do in the league - if we can get Europe they will be right in the mix I suspect, otherwise they'll be under the radar too much

One of the best loan signings we had in years (we haven't had many). The likes of him, Lukaku, Donovan, Geri. Think Arteta was a loan wasn't he as well.
Pienaar and Yobo were too. Manuel Fernandes also did well on loan for us but then jibbed us off if I remember correctly.

Best loan signing in the history of the club? Super Kevin Campbell.

Missed out Elliott Anderson who's a lock. Henderson looks like he'll be in the squad simply for leadership qualities and in fairness he's been o.k for Brentford.

Just think you’re doing Gareth Barry a huge disservice by comparing him to James garner and calling him solid and dependable.

He was a genuinely brilliant footballer. One of the best I’ve seen play for us.
