2025/26 David Moyes

We had Nyarko, Stephen Hughes and Scott Gemill. Are any more technically gifted than KDH, Grealish or N’Diaye?
Our midfield 20 years ago had Arteta, Cahill, Gravesen, Osman, Fernandes, van der Meyde.

But I am speaking generally, across the world of football, not cherry picking a few players to suit my argument. Football is not as entertaining for me as it was 20 years ago. Not even 10 years ago.

This is not just down to players of course, but style of play deployed by managers and said managers micro-managing players to death that they become risk-averse. And of course, the sport being less and less accepting of tough tackling.

Even international football is lacking star teams that we had 20 years ago.

I repeat: I am not furious or fuming. I'm just not impressed, because as I've stated umpteen times before - this is a piss poor league.

Moyes' post match comments annoy me though. He's gone back on his summer claim that he was targeting Europe...now there's an expectation of it he denies it and says everyone needs to remember where we've come from.

David Moyes - managing Everton expectations since 2002.
Can you find a link for where Moyes said Europe was the target this season?

And please don’t link the quotes around him talking about how he wants to get us back there because that’s where our club should be. Because that’s different to saying that’s what we should be aiming for this season.

On what metrics is the PL now average? I just don't see it. High quality, high scoring, high paced games week in week out. Brighton Vs West Ham, previously a game that would send me to sleep, was a really good game yesterday. Most if not all teams are tactically astute and have players who can handle a football, many more teams are competitive.

As I say, there aren't 4 teams that are streets ahead of the rest anymore, but I think that there is a degree of nostalgia in saying that that means the league isn't as good as it used to be. I can only see two (Arsenal and City) who could compete against the best in other European leagues (before one might argue that there would be 4 or 5) but the overall standard of the league has gone up imo.
Did you watch Fulham vs Palace after Brighton vs West Ham? It was crap.

Some very strange posts on here today.

Who cares if the league is Stronger/Weaker, either way it plays out the same.

The only way that can make a difference is if the top lot are stronger and the bottom lot are weaker.

The higher we finish the more money comes in to the club, we have more spending power, we have more appeal.

Who cares on the league strength 🤷‍♂️

A garbage PL team that's barely clinging to the top half of the table with a goal differential of zero brushed aside Real Madrid...

Other than var being exhausting I've really enjoyed watching this season beyond Everton , it feels actually competitive where you have teams like Aston Villa (who knows for how long) currently in the title race. Instead of over analyzing every aspect , let's just enjoy the fact Everton are in a position to possibly contend for an European spot especially when just a couple months ago we are in a dismal slump which honestly had me doubting Moyes.

So just to get this straight and I`ll do a little time line for you, so as not to confuse your clearly demented brain :

After a few games you stated that Moyes would get us relegated = Sack the ginger fraud.

Then results picked up = If he doesn`t get us in the top ten, sack the ginger fraud.

Then the results REALLY picked up = If he doesn`t get us into Europe, sack the ginger fraud.

Then results REALLY REALLY started to pick up and as it stands Europe is a possibility = THE LEAGUE IS CRAP.

Should be very easy for Dyche to rocket Forest up the league with everyone else being so bad. Clearly 17th in this utter pile of dog wank rubbish league would be an embarrassing blemish on his resume.

Aston Villa are one of the worst teams I've watched at BMD this season. They were time wasting in the first half of the game, they weren't interested in playing football at all.

They were missing a couple of midfielders, but even still. It's a crime we didn't win that game, probably would have if we'd had a decent striker.

He`s changed the goal posts for Moyes this season more times than the ground staff at FF.

I think we can safely assume at this juncture, that he`s just making stuff up as he goes along in a desperate attempt to save face. ( again )

So what? Last season our players weren’t Moyes’ but it didn’t stop you berating him every week.

The thing with Moyes is that there's so much to berate him for.

Full disclosure: I'll never ever like or respect him. He insulted this club and the fans in particular when he was here last time and when he was with United. There's a lot who conveniently forget all that. I'm not one of them.

But I've always conceded this season - after he's had a chance to bring in his own players which he has to the tune of £110M - that if he gets us top 10 then that's adequate and he should be retained for the last year of his contract; a European slot is very creditable...but if we miss top 10 he's failed and he needs to leave.

I cant say fairer than that.

Why did this not stop you falling head over heels in love with the fat kopite walrus when he came in?

20-25 years ago most sides would be filled with technially gifted players and the odd athlete in the side, now it's the complete opposite.
This is what the likes of Michael Owen would want you to believe.

At the very top that might be true. The current game demands more physically so a more technically limited player who has physical gifts has a greater chance of making it into a top side (I see you James Milner). Today's game is less about individualism too, so the maverick won't make it in a top side without the hard work and being more humble.

But that's at the top end. Otherwise the modern game demands a lot more technically of players than it did. The pace of the game is faster, the tactics generally require that players are able to play with the ball in all areas of the pitch.

It's easy to look 20 years ago and harp for the likes of a Ronaldinho or an Henry or a John Terry

But people forget that the likes of Robbie Savage, Michael Brown or (whisper it) Tony Hibbert had long and established premier league careers.

Think we look at football through rose tinted glasses based on highlights packages and the longing diatribes of ex players.

I re-watched the full 90 back of the France Brazil World Cup semi final in 06 the other day (I have no life) and honestly, the standard of football was shocking compared to today
