2026 FIFA World Cup

I largely agree. But they've been moving teams around like this during world cups for pretty much all of the modern era.

America is big. The only way to grasp it (more than intellectually) is to drive it.

We had a friend visiting from the UK 20 years ago. He was on a work trip to sandiego and visited us for the weekend in anaheim and it blew his mind the amount of time it took him to get there despite being on a large straight freeway the whole time. It's big, and on a map of the usa, the two cities look adjacent.
The last world cup was played pretty much in just one city, so we have now seen the extreme ends of travel requirements.

It changes the way you play. Pressing for 90 minutes just isn't possible
Yes but still, with advancements in sports science teams have better chances these days of winning outside their own conditions. And also, I think it's always been a bit of a myth that teams can't win outside their own continents. Lots of teams have come very close to doing it over the years. Germany in 86 for example, Italy in 94, Argentina in 90 etc

I have a brother in Vacouver and was hoping to get tickets and go out there for a random match as part of a longer holiday. But after watching the horror show of the WC draw I'm kind of glad to have missed out added to that the process for buying and the costs of the resold tickets. FIFA allowing stubhub esque touting unlimited amount of times as they make a cut.

What can possibly go wrong…

I agree that the gap will be narrowed, just that there is still a gap and there will be some impact.

It may be as well that players would be better able to recover between games than previously if they overextended themselves during the game, but that there isn't as much impact in game or vice versa, tho I find it unlikely.
