Everton Semi Final Day 1980 Villa Park

I remember watching this on the Saturday morning, I couldn't get a ticket for the game. I listened to the game on Radio City, in those days it was full commentary for the second half, but only updates were given during the first half.
I don't remember the semi final, only the replay that I went to, which I think was at Elland Road, although I might be mistaken, I was only 9!

Correct. I was 14 and went to Home Farm v Rovers at Tolka. Someone had a tranny (the original meaning!!) and at FT of the Rovers game I just knew WHU had gone one up.

I legged it back to the city centre, got my 46A home and sat down in time for highlights at 10.30. After Devonshire scored I was basically watching 'live'.

I went berserk when Latch equalised only for heartbreak when Lampard bobbled the winner.

I cried my eyes out.

Coming back along the M62 after the game was a real low point .

Remember the game at Villa Park.
Everton 1-0 up through Peter Eastoe.
Brian Kidd and Ray Stewart having a punch up.
Of course the Everton Player gets
Sent off and not the
West Ham player.
Changed the game and ended up 1-1 then the Elland Rd replay. West Ham sending tickets back and
Lampard celebrating around the corner flag.
Heady days indeed!!!

When semi finals were relevant.
I was watching a few old semi-finals from the 70s and 80s recently as part of a bigger deep dive into retro football, and I was struck by what marvelous occasions they were in the football calendar. The frenzied excitement, anticipation, and sheer buzz provided by those games is just not replicated in modern football.

Derby-Man United 1976, Brighton-Sheffield Wednesday 1983, Arsenal-Sunderland 1973, Everton-Luton 1985, pretty much every semi every year was a massive event. That's all been utterly lost now. The FA Cup final has been devalued since the FA forced United to abandon their defence and play in Brazil in 2000 in vain hope it would help them win the 2006 hosting rights. But people forget how much the semis have been ruined. Playing games at Wembley is the least of it (albeit the nail in the coffin).

The old semis were unique occasions: United-Liverpool at Goodison in 85, and then Maine Road for the replay. Us and Southampton at Highbury the year before. Palace and Liverpool at Villa Park in 90. The Oldham-United saga the same year. Ricky Villa and Garth Crooks against Wolves in 81. Indelible memories. Nothing like it today.
