Absolute Legend Carlos Ancelotti

riddick

Player Valuation: £70m
Why didn't it really work here? We brought in 3-4 players for him in James/etc. I get him leaving, it's Real Madrid. Where he continued to win everything. God I miss him.

But, straight up, we were absolute ass for almost a straight year. I "get" that we had substandard players that he was accustomed to. That football that was on display was some of the worst I've ever seen. You literally knew 5 minutes into a match how it was going to end. I just don't get how we just looked so so poor with internationals at almost every position.

We were a stop gap, he wanted to keep busy (on the pay roll) and we were a well paying enough gig for him to slum it with for a bit.
The moment a former squeeze flashed him a bit of leg he was off on 'kin rocket ships.
There is a scene in 'The Departed' DiCaprio and Nicholson...
JN "Do you know John Lennon?"
LD "Yeah, sure, he was the president before Lincoln."
JN "Lennon said, "I'm an artist. You give me a 'kin* tuba, I'll get you something out of it."
LD "Well I tell you Mr. Costello, I'd like to squeeze some 'kin* money out of it."

This scene has always stuck with me re Carlo. Because let's face it, he was handed a beat up tuba of a side and he got it singing. The moment he left, the magic was gone.

That the owner was so tone deaf with his next appointment just added insult to injury. A very large fat insult!

It started to go wrong when it became obvious to him that Moshiri was lying through his 'kin teeth about funds and all the talk about "projects" was going to come to nothing. Its a mark of how good a manager he is that he got such a piss poor side to look so good for as long as he did. You only have to look at how bad things got under the pig immediately after Anchelotti left to see the difference he made.

Getting Ancelotti was a gimmick, this was Moshiri all over, constantly hiring somebody not because of their values, a similar philosophy or anything deep but because it would make the club look good for business. Same with Benitez, same with Lampard.

The entire approach of "we'll just get X to plug this gap, plus he won a trophy with 10 other men years ago" rather than "this player has X quality, he'd suit our style better than what we have" is why we've ended up in a mess now.

The club wasnt set up for success. Any manager would have struggled to push the club on long term, the infrastructure hasn’t been there. As much as I wanted it to work i was kidding myself and I don’t blame the fella for going back to Real Madrid.

It was infuriating when fellow blues would say things like “wait till the end of the transfer window” in defence of the custodians and stuff like that. Like changing so many managers never hit home that our problems were bigger than that or worse they were aware but pushed these narratives for other means.

I would have been interested to see how we would perform with Carlo under these new owners.

He only came to us because of the huge money that was offered to take the job. after his time at Napoli there wasn`t a lot of clubs going straight in to get him. We signed a few players that summer that helped to put his stamp on the team, but we were sliding down the table as the season went on, and he wasted no time at the first offer that came his way to jump ship. I think he saw the potential car crash that was in our near future and was going to jump ship at the first good offer that came along.
