The Oldies Thread

We have had fireworks continually for weeks this way due to Religious celebrations, Halloween and Bonfire Night, they had trouble over in Brum last night with youths chucking fireworks at a bus and then when the police turned up at them. Dread to think what sort of trouble at Villa Park tonight, glad I don't live that way

Cannot say it's quiet near me but nowhere near as many fireworks let off as was the case in th past. Probably because the neighbourhood is generally older, certainly less kids about around here nowadays.
What I'd like to know is when did 'bonfire night' morph into 'fireworks night'?
When I was a kid nearly every area would compete to see who could have the most massive bonfire. Most gardens had a small family bonfire and large communal fires could be seen on any patch of waste land.
I was out and about on a little pub crawl last night and the air was full of fireworks and the noise was deafening, BUT I never saw signs of even one bonfire 🤷‍♂️
Even the organised events that I saw advertised were 'firework displays' rather than bonfires.
Rockets and bangers are fine, but where the Hell do they roast there jacket potatoes these days

Actually, to answer my own question they probably do them in a bloody 'air fryer'

I remember paying £1.90 to go in the Street end, coins at the turnstiles, except for major ties such as the Derby, Bayern etc in the 80s.

I loved my half and half beany Everton/Celtic hat, although with age I am not as enthusiastic as I used to be about Celtic. I still like them but also Hibs.

I can't remember what it was to go in the terrace at Milltown but I think it was under a pound.
Seating killed football - some games a few were all ticket, it's not a working man's anymore- away fans in some cases pay more than home fans -
In my day most matches you could attend on a whim big attendances too...
I watched non league for a while - standing available half time a pie & a pint not ripped off - believe it or not Goodison was like that once - Sayers pie & a bottle of beer in a cardboard 1/2 pint at half time ... slightly dearer than outside, but never a rip off!

Yes when the fire had roared to it’s peak and had calmed down I always had a couple of big potato’s to put near the edge of the fire and smack my lips while waiting for them to be ready to eat, mind you I always went to one of the four squares in Soho St. on bonfire night so I had my eyes on the potatoes in case they were snaffled by some one else.
