2025/26 Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

He wouldn't be great as one of a midfield two

Ideally you play a 433 and play KDH as the left-sided number 8, which is where all the best form of his career has been

Personally I'd like to see a 433 with Garner moving back to left back (Mykolenko has been practically playing as another centre mid in possession anyway), Gana holding and Rohl and KDH as the number 8s
This is it for me should be a three mid like most teams, problem with kdh in the 10 is we dont have another mid who will push forward into the space . Is frustrating why moyes has not tried it for me even dropping kdh into a mid two and alcaraz in the 10. The limited time have seen rohl looks like would be a good option as has that speed to drivr forward

Maybe but players tend to say that because that's where they feel most comfortable playing, putting them out of position where they don't feel comfortable is not going to get the best out of players, Alcaraz being an example as he can literally only play in the middle as that's where he is comfortable. Tbh I have been thinking a bit about this since yesterday and its an interesting topic of debate.
It depends. Alcaraz is a bit of a weird one really, there's no obvious reason why he should find it so much harder out wide but he just looks totally lost out there. I can only assume it's a mental thing with him because there are times when he just has to do exactly the same role but 20 yards closer to the touchline and yet he looks like it's a completely alien concept. For most players I just don't think it's a big deal, I think probably 25% or more of outfield players in the PL regularly play in a position that they don't think is their ideal role, whether that's a centre half playing full back, someone who would rather be central playing wide or vice versa, an '8' playing as a '6' *throws up in mouth*, it's just a normal part of modern football. In context the point being made was effectively 'just because it's where he would rather play doesn't mean he'd actually be any good there' and as I said, while it may not be true specifically in KDH's case, as basic premise it's absolutely 100% true.

If he'd have said "my best position is a centre half" then sure, people can call him out on it.

For him to say "my best/favourite position is as a box-to-box 8", which is what he played pretty much all 23/24 season to earn his Chelsea move, and be basically called wrong by a buggy alpha version of the Matrix sat in his chair in America is absolutely mental, not interesting.
He is wrong though!

My guess with Alcaraz is he struggles with general positioning out there which leads to him playing slower mentally and that’s kinda where his edge is in the middle. When he’s on it the ball moves quick. I think if he played a run of games and had the ability to develop an understanding with a competent fullback he’d probably be fine.

Dewsbury-Hall is probably a better player box to box when his team is completely on top as Leicester were in the championship and Chelsea were in the Conference league. For Everton in the PL it’s a different job.

What an expected crock of crap.
I just do not believe that a player struggling to not foul and pick up bookings and to win the ball playing in the areas he’s currently playing is going to be passable in an area that requires him to not be bad at all of that. He’s a tweener and it stinks, but that’s the problem with not planning out your signings in a competent way.

Yeh, you're right, all those very deserved bookings he's had.

I think its more playing your signings in a competent way..

It’s both! The players need to be signed with a plan for how they’ll be used and how the team fits together but on the other side the manager needs to be able to actually pull that off. It’s an alignment of what the club is trying to do that matters a lot.

How long do you think it will take for the penny to drop, and for people (not least Moyes), to recognise just how problematic playing him as a number 10 is, and that it's costing us points?

Doucoure was genuinely more effective in that role. Alcaraz is more effective as well.

Was him playing at the 10 the reason we dropped points vs Spurs?

Possibly. It makes us less effective in attack.

I'm not arsed enough to argue the toss tbh. I'm just wondering how long it will take for the penny to drop, because it will do, eventually.
