We're creating a lot of chances at the moment and appear to have multiple ways of progressing the ball up the pitch, getting balls into the box and fashioning shooting opportunities. I personally think we're actually quite fun to watch as an attacking unit. The narrative therefore follows when you fail to take those chances and win games: our biggest issue is the goalscorer, or lack thereof.

What is less spoken about is our defensive record. We're 4th bottom for big chances conceded and expected goals conceded in total across the season so far. Rarely have we looked assured within games and it's very easy to get at us as a unit, and we make lots of individual mistakes. In fact you could argue that had West Ham and Brighton not massively underperformed their XG against us we'd be worse off still. A hypothetical, yes, but the numbers allude to a structural issue somewhere in that back line.

Something needs to change. Drop one of the centre halves and put JOB in instead, with Garner right back? Play a back three? Is the issue lack of a screen in midfield?

What would you do?

Buy some full backs. A back three with no full backs is like Santa’s sleigh with no reindeer.

Without Branthwaite it’s an extremely average defence. The Michael Keane fan club can squeal all they want about whether he’s been better than Tarkwoski or not but it’s just two sides of the same coin covered in crap and completely irrelevant. Being in the best form of your career and only being slightly better than a player in the worst form of his entire career isn’t the brag that some people think it is. When Branthwaite doesn’t play, we leak 1-2 goals per game.

I’d put Jake OBrien in the middle with Tarkwoski and hope that Tarkwoski’s form improves without Keane next to him

I mentioned in another post but it doesn't seem Moyes is that bothered by the fullback situation.

Agree, but until Jan we’re stuck with what we have. Myko tries hard but is crap and DM doesn’t trust Aznou to play out-and-out FB so the only solution that comes to mind is moving Jake inside and playing a 3-4-3.

Garner has capably covered every other position so far, so I’m sure he can manage RWB until Jan.

I also think that gives us the option to address our other major problem, that being crap strikers: play a 3 of Grealish/Illy/Dibling or similar and let them pull defences hither and yon with their sexy dribbling and movement. Leave the big trees on the bench for an extended period to think about what they’ve done.

We're not creating a lot of chances, we're creating a few, plus a lot of half chances.
As for the defence, I'd go for either a back three, or as you suggested put Garner at right back, or even Coleman, who managed to play two games for Ireland last week.
The whole teams structure needs changing to get the best out of the squad we have. A progressive manager who can embrace and enhance the modern game would help massively.

We aren’t shooting nearly enough honestly

The transfer window doesn't open until January friend

What worried me also yesterday was the lack of physicality in the team. Easily shoved off the ball.
Not good for set pieces if everyone outside of the back four and the number 9 is smaller than 6ft and dainty

Leeds bullied us first game of the season and other teams will as well

Bit of horses for courses would be good, maybe play Rohl and Tim when we come up against the bigger teams
