The CM conundrum

….Moyes seems to have his preferred CM axis, we don’t truly progress without an effective central striker.

But is it working?

Im not convinced. Gana been one of my fav players for years, but I do feel he’s not quite as impactful as he used to be. Maybe just needs a rest.

You’ve got Garner playing here, there & everywhere.

Tim does look much improved, AB’s maybe deserves a start? As does Alcaraz.

Rohl could be brilliant, but we’ll not no unless he plays. Who does he replace?!

It’s a conundrum!

Lucky man.

….the team have done very well from what I can see. Moyes doing a fine job, think he won an award for the last game & a Manager of the Month this season.
That’s fine. We can’t always solve problems with money. He’s got two options, he sent another packing, he can get creative if he needs to but it’s not a throw more money at it spot.

Another season of people wanting our best midfielder by a country mile dropped is it?
You talking about Gana?

Thing is though that there comes a point that we really have to start preparing for life without him and we have 4 other senior midfielders there now to properly look at in certain configurations (and thats not even including Harrison Armstrong).

Spot on. I’ve loved Gana, and still feel he’s a big role to play.

However, as you’ve pointed out we also need to be succession planning as his days at the very top are dwindling.

And that’s at no disrespect to Gana, it’s just natural with any player of a certain age…

It’s always a nice problem to have when there’s good options off the bench & debates over who starts etc.

BUT, are all the current CM options, and debates over who’s best in which position now beginning to hinder us?

I’m not sure Moyes knows the best 3 either. (Ignoring the wide players)

Gana - imo not undroppable
Tim - Looked decent in his cameos
Rohl - showing some promise, could be effective
KDH - technically excellent, but not working in the 10
Alcaraz - not being played in his best position
Garner - playing well, currently undroppable?

6 players there for 3 CM positions (whether that be DM, CM, 10)

But just doesn’t feel like we’ve found our best 3 yet, and now beginning to hinder us?

Thoughts?

I’d play an actual midfield 3. Garner sitting deep in the middle with KDH and Alcaraz running forward either side.

In Moyes system I’d probably play Gana next to KDH, with Alcaraz at 10. Move Garner to RB.

I think we (as supporters) need to look at the balance.

KDH & Gana both naturally take up similar spaces as left sided players.

One being a presser and the other being a player reliant on technical on the ball ability and positioning.

Garner is a good all round player with heart who can play as a 6 or a right sided 8.

Alcaraz is a 10 or an 8 in a 433 who plays off the cuff, great on transition and, like Garner plays with heart.

Iroegbunam looks to be Gana-lite with little desire to sit and more interested to be a tackle machine.

Rohl looks like he could be special though has had an injury plagued career in a less physical and slower league:

Based on the above's basic synopisis:

DM - Garner
RCM - Alcaraz
LCM - KDH or Gana

Iroegbunam to come off the bench if we need to add a tackler in the middle.

Rohl to be used sparingly and to be honest, even if he turns out to be good this season then we should move him on once he becomes permanent in the summer due to his injury record.

In this Moyes setup currently i'd have Gana, Garner with Alcaraz as 10.

But Moyes seems to need to play KDH and soon I think the same with Rohl as he paid close to £50mil for the pair.

That £50mil would have been FAR FAR FAR better spent on Elliot Anderson for example (who now is unsellable for Forest).

Yep, but even taking that fact away we'll still be without him come to AFCON either way..
