Memories of the 70’s

I was leaning on a barrier at the Bolton game which collapsed just before kickoff which i believe our fans were blamed for but it just gave way.
I was travelling back down south with escla so we had all the windows on the coach back to Manchester
A great night all the same
I have little memory of that game , a mate got me a ticket, went in his car , we won , that’s about it. Oh and it was followed by the most boring Wembley final I’ve ever been to , 0-0 versus Villa.

Never got to the second leg,too young🙄my old fella went,I was at the first leg and thought we'd blown it,whatmore I think equalised for them near the end,I still remember listening to the late, great Peter Jones commentary at bolton as we were closing in on what at the time was a massive win,"and Lawson the Everton keeper will look at the ball ,he looks at the manufacturers name on the ball,he will take his time,he clears the ball into the floodlights, and there it is Everton are at Wembley"🤣👍happy days!!

The first Sunday game at Goodison.

Remember it well,as a kid it seemed really weird a kick off time of anything other than 3pm or 730pm midweek.

v Baggies F.A. Cup circa 1973 or ‘74.

The archaic laws back then meant EFC couldn’t charge you to get in the game…you had to buy a programme and that was your entrance fee 😂

(the match ended 0-0 and we lost the replay at The Hawthorns 😞)

The “ Ernie Hunt” goal for Coventry , 71/72 ish , remains a weird memory . In those days you could move around Coventry’s old ground , we’d come to a halt , all I saw was a ball going directly up in the air , coming down , rising again into the back of our net. It wasn’t until I got home and watched MoTD that I knew what happened. Somebody had the ball between their feet , flicked it up in the air, Hunt hit it in on the volley . It was banned afterwards as a double-touch , so only occurred against us. Everton that.
Willie Carr did the 2 footed flick up

Over the season the pitches lost more and more of their grass. A bad winter could lead to playing on quagmires. I remember on at least one occasion that the penalty spot was obliterated and the fellas had to come on the pitch, take some measurements and repaint the spot before a penalty could be taken ...

It happened - perhaps inevitably at The Baseball Ground - during a game between Derby and Manchester City in April 1977. Joe Corrigan was booked for disputing where the penalty spot should have been.
Derby won 4-0, and Brian Kidd was sent off.

I was just infont of that barrier , it went and a few of us tried to push it back to save the fans behind it from going over.
Scary few seconds while they pushed back to make room.
Then it just snapped we did get the blame for it.
A Bit if it got lashed over the fench between us and Bolton to the left, think that's why we got the blame for it.
Parts of that terrace we covered in what looked like cider rather than concrete , luckily nobody got hurt.

Not Everton related, but one of my greatest football memories happened in 74, when I watched Chester beat a full strength champions Leeds 3-0 in the league cup. Apparently, Billy Bremner who'd been subbed off, waited in the tunnel to shake hands with all the Chester players. Great times.

Great bit of John Motson commentary "are we going to see the penalty spot painted during the game?!?!"

What a mess that pitch was , recall us playing them on that they had Mackay playing for them, it was just mud no grass at all.
